Coldplay Introduces Final Album on a Faith-Based Note

Coldplay’s new album, Moon Music, comes out Oct. 10, but a single from the record, “We Pray,” is already out.

The song is about pushing through time on Earth in hopes of something better — heaven.

Some of the lyrics read:

“Praying on your love
We pray with every breath
Though I – I – I’m in the valley of the shadow of death
And so We Pray
And so We Pray
And so We Pray
Pray that we make it to the end of the day
And so We Pray
I know somewhere that heaven is waiting
And so We Pray
I know somewhere there’s something amazing
And so We Pray
I know somewhere we’ll feel no pain
Until we make it to the end of the day

Premier Christian News observed, “We Pray’…appears to articulate a deep spiritual hunger, with lyrics such as: ‘I pray that I don’t give up, pray that I do my best’ and ‘so we pray for someone to come and show me the way.’ Martin also borrows straight from the Bible in the track, describing modern-day life as living in ‘the valley of the shadow of death’ (Psalm 23).”

But frontman Chris Martin says there won’t be many more songs for Coldplay. The band’s twelfth album will be its final.

“We are only going to do 12 proper albums and that’s real. Yeah, I promise,” Martin said. “Because less is more and, for some of our critics, even less would be even more! It’s really important that we have that limit.”

“There’s only seven ‘Harry Potter’ [books]. There’s only 12-and-a-half Beatles albums, there’s about the same for Bob Marley, so all our heroes,” he continued. “Also, having that limit means the quality control is so high right now, and for a song to make it, it’s almost impossible, which is great.”

Though BBC says Coldplay is one of the most popular and successful bands of the 21st century, the group is still “trying to improve.”

Martin also wants everyone to be able to enjoy their life apart from the band.

“It’s such a lot of wrangling of people and I want to give the others some of their life for themselves,” he explained. “I don’t want to be, when we’re 60, be like, ‘Will [Champion], we need you. Come on! We can do better than this!’”

Though Coldplay’s end is definite, Martin will continue to make music.

“That will always continue in some way, but there’s something about the Coldplay thing,” said Martin. “I don’t know where the songs come from. I don’t know where the ideas come from, but that’s just been coming to me for about four or five years now. Like, ‘You have to finish like this,’ and I trust that just like I trust the songs.”

Movieguide® reported on another artist’s song about prayer:

Grammy-nominated artist Matthew West dropped a new single at the beginning of this year called, “Don’t Stop Praying.”

Seven months later, the track has hit Billboard’s No. 1 spot on the Christian Airplay chart.

“‘Don’t Stop Praying’ went to #1 this week on the @billboardcharts and I’m so grateful! Getting that call from my record label will never get old! I’m thankful for all of the radio stations sharing this song with their listeners around the world” West wrote on Instagram. “More important than any chart position, I have always aimed to put songs into the world that hit people’s hearts with a message they needed to hear, and the minute this song was written, I felt in my heart that this was a message for our world right now. Whatever it is you’re praying for, and no matter how long you’ve been praying, don’t stop!”
