Colton Dixon Leans on Faith to Lead Family: ‘It’s God First, Family Second’

Christian artist Colton Dixon does his best to balance his career and ministry but always prioritizes his family.

“I think it’s something you have to be intentional about,” the AMERICAN IDOL alum said when asked how he stays faithful to God’s calling. “I think it’s something that you have to constantly check in to make sure that you’re doing what God has asked you to do, because I think that so quickly it can turn from God’s calling into just what you love.”

Dixon says listening to God’s leading, as well as his wife, helps him balance his life correctly.

“It’s a daily conversation with God. It’s a relationship. And not only that, but even with my wife as well. The moment my wife is kind of like, ‘Hey, I think we need you home,’ it’s like, ‘alright, cool, I’m home.’ It’s God first, family second, ministry third for me,” he explained, per The Christian Post.

The singer admitted that he doesn’t always get it perfect, but he does his best.

“I don’t always get those priorities right, that’s something I’m still learning how to manage, but I know at the end of the day that’s what it needs to be,” Dixon shared.

Dixon and his wife Annie share twin daughters, Ava and Athens.

After their birth in 2020, he spoke about how Ava was born without a pulse.

“We never expected our little Ava Dior would arrive in the world without a pulse. In that moment, we had a choice: faith or fear,” he said, per PEOPLE. “We watched and prayed as the doctors and nurses resuscitated our daughter back to life.”

“We thank God and our amazing doctors and nurses for our two little miracles,” he added.

As they’ve grown, he’s found, “I love being a girl dad, first and foremost.”

“I never really understood what parents meant, when they’re like, ‘Man, I didn’t realize I could love someone so much.’ But then you have kids and you go, ‘Oh my gosh. I would literally do anything.’ There’s nothing I wouldn’t do for them,” he explained.

Movieguide® previously reported on the Dixons:

Former AMERICAN IDOL contestant and Christian artist Colton Dixon recently opened up about parenting his two young twin girls, Ava and Athens.

Dixon and his wife, Annie, said their perspective on balancing work and family changed after they had twins.

“Learning to say ‘no’ more often, even if they’re opportunities, because I know that when I say ‘yes’ to something, I’m ultimately saying ‘no’ to being at home with my family,” Dixon told Faithwire. “So that’s something that we really pray about, we weigh.”

Dixon said that he and his wife rely on prayer for many of their decisions as a family.

“It comes back to that whole thing of … not settling for good or better when you can have His best,” he said.
