Comedian Chonda Pierce Calls ‘Comedy’ a ‘Gift’ From God
By Movieguide® Contributor
Christian comedian Chonda Pierce is known for making crowds laugh at the crazy parts of life, peculiarities within the church and her own perspective of the world.
In an interview with CBN’s Faithwire, Pierce talked about her experience as a comedian.
“You have instant gratification or instant rejection. And, I’ve had both,” she said.
Pierce quotes Scripture while also making people laugh, embracing the art of comedy and encouraging her audience to feel the different emotions of life.
“God created every one of our emotions and allows us to use every one of them, even anger,” Pierce stated. “He says, ‘Be angry but sin not’…everything that we do, all the arts, was used at the beginning for worship.”
Ultimately, Pierce knows that the “art of comedy” is a “sweet gift” from God.
Pierce also gave her take on cancel culture.
She explained that comedy can provide an accurate representation of the culture. Those who try to cancel it are “shooting [themselves] in the foot.”
“In 25 years, there will be no reality of what was really going on in 2023.” Pierce continued. “First of all, there’s free speech, and second of all, you’re missing some great laughs. The world today is so crazy.”
Pierce also discussed her letter to Dave Chappelle when he was “canceled” after commenting on the LGBTQ+ community.
“Every night, I have to please the Baptist, the Presbyterians, the Catholics, the believer and the nonbeliever. It’s really hard, so I want to tell him, ‘Look, you’re not the only one out there that gets beat up every now and then,” Pierce expressed.
“I think Dave Chappelle is absolutely brilliant. I tell my audience, ‘He’s not a Christian; he’s a Muslim.’ That’s his right. I would love to talk to him about Jesus because I want to see him in heaven because he’s absolutely brilliant,” she added.
Movieguide® previously reported on Pierce’s movie ROLL WITH IT:
Comedian Chonda Pierce is finally taking center stage in her latest movie ROLL WITH IT.
Pierce is known as the “Queen of Clean Comedy,” and has made a name for herself in movies like ALL SAINTS and SELFIE DAD.
Her latest movie, the story of a widow working to stay afloat financially, is the first time Pierce has scored a leading role. In addition to that, the comedian has a very personal connection to ROLL WITH IT’s story…
“I pray that people will understand the power of prayer, and how God answers prayer in ways we don’t see Him coming,” Pierce said of her hope for the movie’s impact. “That’s what’s so sweet about this story. The widow, she goes into her prayer closet a lot. And she’s praying, and she’s getting desperate, and she’s getting hurt, because it doesn’t look like God’s coming through. And of course, He does it in a way that she totally didn’t see coming. It has very little to do with karaoke. It has everything to do with his plan. And I love that.”
