Comedian John Crist Celebrates 5 Years Sober: ‘A Miracle’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Comedian John Crist joined the Sadie Robertson’s “Whoa That’s Good Podcast” and discussed his five-year sobriety journey.
“I was in rehab in 2019, and I wanted to end my life,” Crist said on the podcast as he talked about his addiction.
“You lose hope. There’s no way forward,” he recalled. “So, you go well, this current situation is terrible, and then there’s no future. So, what am I supposed to do?”
Crist described his life at the time as a “prison” and something he would “not survive.”

“I remember going to my first AA meeting, and the guy who said he was third, 30 days sober, I go, ‘There’s no way. There’s no way. I don’t believe that,'” Crist said. “And to be five years. So now, granted five years, I still got a lot of problems, but that is a miracle.”
Crist can remember that he made the choice not to end his life, and all he wanted to do was go to Chick-fil-A and play golf.
“I didn’t think I’d ever be a comedian ever again, not even close,” Crist said. “But then I remember, you know, I was like, ‘Well if I could stay sober then I could at least be alive or I could at least be – I don’t know what I would do for work or anything.”
He explained, “I want to be alive, I want to be able to do comedy, I want to be able to spend time with my family, my girlfriend. If you don’t have that outside of a relationship with Christ, I don’t know what to you. Life is all about balance.”
Now, Crist uses his platform to bring laughter and light-heartedness to people as well as share his faith in Jesus.
In his 2022 book, “Delete That,” the comedian “offers heartfelt, laugh-out-loud observations on the absurd ways we all try to make ourselves look better online: like how we all post filtered pictures of our super healthy kale salads but somehow neglect to post about our 1 A.M. Uber Eats Big Mac. Or how quick we all are to post our ‘I Voted’ sticker pictures but fail to post about the ways we vote with our dollars every day in ways that don’t align with our loudly and publicly espoused values.”
He also just launched his “Jokes for Humans” tour, which began March 7 in Branson, Missouri. It wraps up May 11 in Mississippi.
“If you’ve ever seen a standup clip of mine online, don’t worry, the live show is all new material! Come see us this Spring!” he posted.
