Comedian John Crist Says Faith, Rehab and Fans Ministered to Him After Scandal

After rehab in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal, Christian comedian John Crist revealed that he wanted to leave comedy and “commit suicide.”

In a recent video on Facebook, Crist shared how his faith, rehab and fans ministered to him during that time and after, ultimately helping him return to comedy.

“I’ve been through a lot the last two years of my life,” Crist said during a recent show. “I’ve been through a lot of embarrassing things.”

Amid jokes, Crist shared with the audience what it was like in rehab and confessed that “there’s a lot of shame surrounding sex.”

“I wanted to commit suicide,” he said. “I was in rehab for four months.”

However, Crist did not sugarcoat his experience in rehab but said that he was thankful that it happened.

“The only thing worse is if that had never happened to me,” he said, adding later: “Every time I had like a sold-out show or anything I did on television … I thought that if everybody knew the truth about me that all of these people would hate me.

“In that whole rehabilitation process, I found out there’s a God that loves you, and He cares about you, and He’s not mad at you,” he continued.

After rehab, Crist did not think he would have any fans left and wanted to leave his career in comedy. However, an interaction with a family in Five Guys showed him forgiveness.

“[They said], ‘We just want to let you know that we love you and we care about you and we’ve been thinking about you,'” Crist recalled. “It was the first time in my life that people knew everything about me, and they still chose to love me.”

“The people that are out here that bought tickets to my show saved my life in a lot of ways,” he added.
