How This Bible Version Brings Scripture to Life ‘In a Different Way’

This creative retelling of the Bible is still selling big around the world, 15 years after its initial publication.
“The Action Bible,” a comic book retelling of the Bible, was published in 2010. In 2025, it officially hit over three million copies sold in the United States. It has been translated into 108 languages and sold 1.1 million copies around the world, in addition to its US sales.
“What strikes people that read ‘The Action Bible’ is just the beautiful, full action-packed [presentation] and our illustrations that really bring the story to life,” Brock Eastman, senior director of The Action Bible brand, told CBN. “And we like to think about…bringing the Bible to life in a different way.”
He continued, “For this generation, specifically, who is involved with graphic novels, this Bible appeals to them because they like that kind of, ‘Oh, I can see the images of the story moving,’ and there’s a narrative, like a paraphrase narrative of the Bible story that’s easy to understand and sounds like a conversation.”
“The Action Bible” boasts “high-energy, engaging graphics and over 230 spiritually-transformative Bible stories,” per Eastman’s website, as well as the Faith in Action program, “which gives young readers an easy-to-navigate and engaging experience for exploring the Bible through themes that connect directly to their felt needs.”
Eastman explained that “The Action Bible” “has these graphics that the kids…are drawn to,” while still remaining “true to what God’s word is.”
“This is meant to be an evangelism tool because that’s our goal,” he said. “‘The Action Bible’ is a significant tool, and it’s for parents, it’s for churches, it’s for all to get that to a young person and say, ‘Hey, the Bible is pretty interesting. There’s some really awesome stories in here.’”
Eastman is getting ready to release a new study edition of “The Action Bible” this spring.
“The new ESV Study Bibles are full text and full color with amazing Action Bible artwork,” he posted on Instagram.
Another post reads, “Every project is unique and comes with its own process. On the table at @david.c.cook are the proofs of our new @the_action_bible study bibles coming in Spring 2025. It’s so satisfying to see the project come to life in physical form from the months and months of working through digital files! It’s pretty amazing to get to create kids books as part of my career!”
