Cory Asbury Shares Moment He Was ‘Wrecked Under The Love of God’

Worship artist Cory Asbury is sharing the moment he “met God.”

“I grew up in church, but I never really experienced God, or the love of God, or the presence of God — it just wasn’t real to me,” he said during an appearance on the WORSHIP IS MY WEAPON podcast. “It was just a bunch of ideas, it was a bunch of rules, it was a bunch of to-dos…I did not want to be confined by it.”

However, an internship at Kansas City’s International House of Prayer changed everything. One day, a speaker invited the Holy Spirit to enter the room.

“In that moment, I met God,” Asbury said. “He came into that room. I’m just weeping. I’m, like, wrecked.”

He continued, “I start talking to God…how I always related to God, I was scared of Him. I thought He wanted to smite me…I was really aware of His judgment.”

“I heard two things really clearly. The first was, ‘I’ve seen everything you’ve ever done’…He’s seen everything, He knows it all…Second was — I’m feeling this, not hearing it — the second was, ‘And I still want you. I still love you. I still like you. You’re still my kid. You’re still my son,’” Asbury explained. “And I was just wrecked. I was destroyed, because I was so acutely aware of what an absolute mess my life was, and the fact that someone  — not to mention God — still wanted anything to do with me was remarkable.”

Asbury said he was “just wrecked under the love of God.”

“I think for anyone to experience the love of God, you have to know how messed up you are,” the singer explained. “I think a lot of religion like to say, ‘No, I’m fine, I’m good. I don’t need God. I’m holy, I’m doing it by myself.’ And that’s the exact opposite of grace and the kingdom and the gospel.”

Asbury recently paired up with singer-songwriter Taylor Holder for “Climb My Way To Heaven.”

“This song was written with Cory Asbury, Paul Maybury and Harrison Hackett (produced by Andy Sheridan and co-produced by Ben Williams) during one of my darkest hours during one of the hardest times in my life,” Holder said of the track. “This song is a result of a true humbling experience in my life. God taught me to stand back, and trust. I very much hope that as people listen to this song, they feel the experience I had with growing stronger with my relationship with God.”

It’s one of the many musical projects Asbury has worked on as he re-enters the world of music following over a year of full-time ministry work.

“The idea that I took a step back from music is probably not quite accurate. I took a step back from being public with music,” he told Relevant Magazine. “I needed to do some deep heart work. And in the middle of that, I was still writing a ton of music. So yeah, it has been three years since I released music, but I needed to withdraw a little bit and feel and process and decompress.”

Asbury continued, “We processed a lot of life and ministry, and the Lord met us in the middle of that; even the past two or three years since we’ve been here, it’s been really sweet.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Asbury’s faith journey:

Christian artist Cory Asbury opened up about how he came to understand God’s deep love for him despite his sins.

“There’s a God who’s real, wants to be close to me, wants to have a relationship with me, knows all the bad stuff I did and still wants me,” Asbury said in an interview with TBN.

“I also had to wrestle with, ‘Okay. I’ve encountered you. Why do I keep messing up?’ And it’s like, you know, in the book of Romans, Paul talks about ‘I [Paul] keep doing the thing that I don’t want to do,’ referring to basically sin,” he said. “‘I want to be holy, I really love God, but I keep screwing up. What’s wrong?’ And he basically says grace still abounds.”
