Could AI Create New Religions?

By Movieguide® Contributor

Prominent philosopher Yuval Noah Harari believes AI could write new religious texts and create a new religion.

Harari has long made light of Christianity, equating it with fake news and ancient mythology. He believes that AI holds the potential to write a new globally accepted religious text that, in his mind, will be more authoritative than the bible.

“AI can create new ideas; [it] can even write a new Bible,” Harari said, to establish unified and “correct” religions.

“Throughout history, religions dreamt about having a book written by a superhuman intelligence, by a non-human entity,” he continued. Harari believes that AI could become a new type of god.

“In a few years, there might be religions that are actually correct… just think about a religion whose holy book is written by AI. That could be a reality in a few years,” he added.

While many Christians are rightly concerned about Harari’s statements, it shouldn’t be a surprise that an idea like this would emerge from this powerful technology.

Humans have an innate desire to worship God, however, Satan twists this as often as possible into devotion to a false religion. The entirety of the Old and New Testaments are filled with Christians fighting false religions. It should not come as a surprise that a prominent, anti-Christian figure would promote the idea of a new false religion.

This, however, does not mean that Christians should idly sit by while the technology is used for this purpose. AI tools have massive potential for spreading the gospel. Bible translators, for example, are already using AI to greatly increase the speed of their work. Online chatbots could also be used to guide people towards Gospel truth and the bible.

What’s important is who is creating the technology and what is the purpose behind it. Christians should not shy away from the emerging technology, but should embrace the upcoming changes and capitalize on the opportunities to further spread the gospel.

Movieguide® previously reported on AI:

Altman believes that the current tech boom has the potential to be a “printing press moment” forever changing human life. However, he recognizes the risks of the current approach to innovation in the tech industry and is encouraging lawmakers to regulate the boom.

“We think that regulatory intervention by governments will be critical to mitigate the risks of increasingly powerful models,” Altman said in his opening remarks.

IBM’s vice president, Christina Montgomery, also appeared before Congress warning against Silicon Valley’s longstanding mantra of ‘move fast and break things.’

“The era of AI cannot be another era of ‘move fast and break things,” Montgomery said. “We don’t have to slam the brakes on innovation either.”

Altman suggested the government could regulate the industry by creating a licensing program for companies working on AI systems.

“[This] combination of licensing and testing requirements could be applied to the development and release of AI models above a certain threshold of capabilities,” Altman said.

Of the biggest concern are concerns over the use of AI to generate misinformation and manipulate voters, especially as an election year looms around the corner.
