‘God Puts People Across Your Path’: Country Singer Talks Special Friendship with The Rock

An unlikely duo is sharing their story of friendship as well as the details of a new music video.
Wrestling star and actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and country singer Chris Janson discussed how they met and what led them to connect as friends in an interview with PEOPLE.
“We met in a parking lot,” Johnson began. “My family were at one of my favorite hotels and we were having lunch, and we were waiting for our car to pull around, and Chris had come up with his son. He introduced himself and he said, ‘Can I take a picture with you?’ I said, ‘Yeah, I’d love to.’ Took a picture. And we just started just shooting the breeze. We just continue to talk. Then I come to find out in our conversation that Chris was a country music singer.”
Janson believes that God ordained their friendship.
“That just doesn’t happen to people every day. And I am just a firm believer that God puts people across your path at the right time and the precise location when you need it and right when they need it,” he said.
“The value of this friendship means more to me than music videos. It means more to me than business. It means more to me than anything. It’s just the value of a phone call and seeing someone in person and just being able to be friends with somebody on a real level,” Janson added. “The entertainment business always takes us down so many avenues where we can forget what real life looks like and reality.”
The two men kept in touch, and one day, Janson asked Johnson to be in his music video. Johnson agreed, and they met up in Texas to film. The music video, “Whatcha See is Whatcha Get,” includes the two stars riding in a vintage Ford pickup truck, hanging out by the river and singing the song.
“I love this song and love the idea behind it, which is just always remain who you are, anchor in and be your real self,” Johnson told Billboard. “I always like to say the most important thing we could be is ourselves, and that’s what Chris is. That’s one of the reasons why we bonded and we shot the video and it was awesome.”
After the shoot, Johnson recalled expressing how much the get-together meant.
“And I told him, ‘Brother, this means so much to me. I can’t thank you enough. These past couple of hours have been just so nourishing for me. And I know it sounds crazy. It might sound a little corny, but I don’t get this kind of stuff in my life.'”
The Rock posted the video to his Instagram account with an encouraging message to his followers.
“Fans are loving this song, which is awesome. And fans are also loving the meaning behind the song which is even better — be real, be YOU.”

Johnson has three daughters — Simone, 21, Jasmine, 7, and Tiana, 4.
“My number one priority is my daughters,” Johnson said in a recent interview. “Sure, CEO sounds great! But the number one thing I want to be is daddy. That’s it.”
He speaks from experience. Johnson still remembers everything he missed out on in Simone’s life while he was traveling for work with WWE.
“I know what it was like to be on the road and be so busy that I was absent for a lot of years when my first daughter was growing up in this critical age at this critical time in her life,” he shared, pointing to that as his main reason for prioritizing fatherhood.
