CRAZY DELICIOUS Contains Allusions to Pagan Mythos

By Movieguide® Contributor

CRAZY DELICIOUS is a six episode competitive cooking series on Netflix that showcases delightful twists on everyday dishes and household ingredients as three cooks compete for a chance to take home the ‘golden apple.’

In each episode, three contestants compete to win the favor of the ‘food gods’ (AKA the judges.) There are three rounds where their skills are tested. In the first round, contestants create a dish presenting an ordinary ingredient in a prominent and unique way. In the second, they must re-imagine a traditional meal. Only two contestants advance to the final round where they must prepare a variety of dishes around a single theme. The results of these challenges are often visually stunning and impressive, especially considering the time constraints that the chefs are under while cooking.

The show’s theme is creativity, so the studio is set to look like a fairytale garden. Everything from fruit trees to candy rocks are available for the contestants to pick from in this unique setup.

Because of the aesthetic CRAZY DELICIOUS has chosen, there are allusions to pagan mythos. The judges hold the title of “food gods,” and dress in all white. The prize is winning a golden apple, and the judges’ rulings are sometimes called “reckonings.” “Oh my gods” is said once as a tongue and cheek remark.

OMG is said often in every episode. Jesus’s name is used as an exclamation, as is his mother’s. “H**l” is said somewhat often. In one episode, a mushroom name similar to a swear word is used as a substitute. Other very sparse mild language occurs occasionally.

Playful flirting/teasing between people is very common. Occasional sexual innuendos, or references to sensitive body parts in jokes also take place. There is a nude male statue in almost every episode, but its genitals are censored. The host sometimes flirts with the statue for laughs. Drag queens are mentioned as a joke. There is a brief, friendly kiss goodbye between the host and a contestant (both female). There are rainbow images that could imply LGBTQ affiliations, but these are not commented on.

Alcohol is sometimes used in the dishes.

Cooking is shown as a way to connect to family heritage, and many of the contestants cook to bring joy to those around them. There are several times where a contestant may become overwhelmed with anxiety, but they are met by encouragement from those they are competing against, as well as the host and judges. Perseverance and overcoming fear are praised.

Overall, CRAZY DELICIOUS is a whimsical series, and a better pick for slightly older fans of competitive cooking shows.
