Damar Hamlin Has Unfinished Business: ‘Twenty-One Months Ago, I Was Dead’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Nearly two years ago, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin almost died on the field, but God had other plans.
Despite that fearful night, Hamlin is back on the field and taking more snaps (630) than anyone else on his team.
Per Go Long, “On the field 97.67 percent of the time, he’s up to 61 tackles (44 solo), two TFLs, two interceptions, and five pass breakups. He’s a down-in, down-out starter on a Super Bowl contender.”
Before the accident, Hamlin felt he was “just getting started,” and while he’s not quite where he wants to be yet, he’s ready to put in the work.
“I’m still not there yet. I still feel like I got training wheels on, and I’m still getting the dust off of this thing,” he said. “I’m nowhere near where I can be at. Twenty-one months ago, I was dead. There’s still healing to be done. OK, I did a full season of not playing, and then I did a full season of playing. Think about what I’ll be able to do with that type of growth. I’m still in the growing process. I’m still learning with each game, and I’m still getting back to who I am. To get through another full season, I can just see myself truly. The sky’s the limit for me. I really see myself as one of the best safeties in this league.”
Hamlin is grateful for the second chance at life and wants to give God the glory.
“It’s all God right there,” he said after he scored his first career interception earlier this season. “So, I been giving Him the praise like crazy lately.”
He also uses his platform to raise awareness about cardiac arrest.
“Today marks the first day of sudden cardiac arrest awareness month and all I want to do is give you the tools to save so you can save a life,” Hamlin posted on Oct. 1. “Anything can happen. Anyone can help. Anyone can be a hero.”
