Danny DeVito Says MIGRATION Brought Him ‘Joy’

Actor Danny DeVito is opening up about his latest role as Uncle Dan in Illumination’s new film, MIGRATION.

DeVito, who co-stars as the “curmudgeonly, adventure-averse” duck, talked about the joys of being part of the project.

“I’m excited for MIGRATION,” DeVito shared.  “I’ve had some reactions from some kids already, and they kind of like dig Uncle Dan so that makes me happy.”

“It’s fun doing these movies. I did HERCULES. I did MY LITTLE PONY years ago. I mainly did them because of my three kids,” he added.

“I started out doing MY LITTLE PONY because my kid was born like 40 years ago, and she loved MY LITTLE PONY,” DeVito told the Christian Post. “I went and did the voice in that. And then I did HERCULES because I wanted my kids to hear my voice coming out of these various and crazy characters. And then when THE LORAX came along, that was perfect; they were a little older.”

“You want to go there, and you want to go see the look and that kids face when they’re watching. That gives you the joy,” he explained.

Even though DeVito has worked on movies in other genres, kids’ movies are some of his favorites.

“I do a lot of different movies and a lot of different genres, but I like to stay in the younger generation, like MIGRATION, quite a bit,” he expressed. “I feel like I wind up with kids who are still holding on to their mom’s and dad’s hands as a fan of Uncle Dan and once they meet you and hear your voice and recognize you through that, that gives you the juice.”

MIGRATION follows the Mallard family as they make their way from New York to Jamaica.

“As the Mallards make their way South for the winter, their well-laid plans quickly go awry,” a synopsis of the film reads. “The experience will inspire them to expand their horizons, open themselves up to new friends and accomplish more than they ever thought possible, while teaching them more about each other—and themselves—than they ever imagined.”

Movieguide® recently reported on MIGRATION:

MIGRATION director Benjamin Renner recently sat down with Movieguide® to discuss the movie’s theme of overcoming fear and how he related to the main character.

“The main character, Mack, has this thing about like overcoming fear, and it was really what sort of attracted me to the project,” Renner began. “At first the idea of talking about a character who loves to stay in his comfort zone, in his routine, because it’s so easy to get into that. I have the same issue myself, and I notice that everyone around me tends to have this problem. Fear is something you try to avoid and by staying in a comfort zone and doing the same thing all over again. It’s pleasant. But we all know that we need to evolve. We need to challenge life.”

“That’s what was great with this movie. Just try to talk about this necessity of life that you should not embrace fear, but you should leave fear so you can evolve and challenge life and grow,” Renner continued.
