Danny Gokey Wants Americans to be More Patriotic, Releases New EP ‘Brave’

Singer Danny Gokey wants to restore American patriotism and inspire unity in the hearts of Americans.

“There are so many opinions out there, and when it comes to our country, since there are so many voices of shame, guilt, opinions and ideas, people don’t know what to feel,” Gokey told The Christian Post.

To help restore people’s pride in the U.S., Gokey released a three-song EP titled, Brave. The EP includes a cover of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA,” along with two original songs, “Brave” and “My America.” The singer also released a “My America” music video to share his message.

“I think everywhere you live, you should celebrate,” Gokey said. “Every country has a past, but the people decide where the country goes. So I started writing songs for our country… with the hope of restoring patriotism, the hope of restoring a sense of pride in our country. The United States of America is built on a system of freedom. And not every county has been able to have that. I want just to get a sense of pride in the people to celebrate us again.”

On Instagram he posted, “America may have picked up some bruises & scars along the way, but it’s still the land I love ❤️?? I am grateful for the Liberty, the Freedom, and I still believe in us! ???”

Gokey believes that the current lack of patriotism comes from the over magnification of America’s faults. Rather than viewing American history as a whole, many people are only really learning about the mistakes of the past.

“When I wrote these songs, I took a magnifying glass and put it over the good things in our country in order to move out the negativity and put the positive view in it,” he said.

Patriotism, he believes, could be a powerful unifier at a time when political rifts seem to be pulling the country apart.

“Unity is such a powerful force,” Gokey said. “And unity is what we need to keep moving forward and to keep having freedom. Because the Bible says a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand. The enemy always works with division, with an over-emphasis on the problem verses what can be.”

Gokey encouraged younger generations to familiarize themselves with the country’s founding documents. Rather than be swayed by what they are seeing and hearing on social media, he urges young people to think for themselves and form their own opinions based on biblical truth.

“Begin to be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” he said. “A lot of times, there’s so much noise that we allow people to think for us. For the young generation, don’t allow others to think for you. Learn to think for yourself, and learn to think in truth and not an emotion and not in anything else that can be misleading.”

Of his song, “My America,” Gokey said: “As bad as things may have seemed the past few years, there’s still so much to believe in! Let this song be a reminder of all the things to celebrate about America, not just on the 4th of July, but all year long. And it would mean so much if you would like & share it, so as many people as possible can be reminded too!”

Movieguide® previously reported on Gokey:

“For me, it starts with a prayer,” Gokey told The Christian Post. “I do this every record. And I feel like … as I keep growing, [God’s] downloading more. I pray, ‘Lord, You’re the greatest lyricist of all time. I want to say what You’re saying. I want to speak what You’re speaking.’

“By faith, I get ready to receive. I don’t hear audible voices. I just, by faith, receive that God’s going to speak and write through me, and I start paying attention,” Gokey added.

Gokey said that his ultimate goal is to inspire Christian to stand firm in their faith, a message conveyed in his favorite song from the album with the same title, “Jesus People.”
