Danny Gokey Says ‘Fear God’ Through All Seasons of Life

Danny Gokey is reminding his followers that there is a season for everything.
“What season of life are you facing right now? Are you in a season of prayers answered or praying for the answer?” he asked his followers in an Instagram video. “Are you in a season of breakthrough or you feel like you’re in a season of being stuck and you can’t get past the glass ceiling that’s above your head? Are you in a season of mourning or a season of dancing? Are you in a season of joy or a season of heaviness? Why do I ask these questions? Because the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 3 that there’s a season for everything.”
The singer explained that there is a simple answer for how we should conduct ourselves “in every season.”
“Fear God. Keep his commandment. For this is the duty of all mankind,” Gokey said. “No matter what season you’re in, fear God. How do we fear God? The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. You’ll find answers when you fear God. You’ll take Him at his word. If you don’t fear God, you’ll cast his word aside and do what you feel. But fear God [and] you’ll always come out on top.”
Gokey frequently shares scripture and inspirational messages with his followers.
In another recent post, he wrote, “Do you find yourself losing faith in the face of tragedies? There is so much darkness and sadness, but don’t let it cause you to doubt God. Keep praying. In Luke 18:7 it says, ‘Will not God bring about justice for His chosen ones, who cry out to Him day and night?’ He wants to be invited into these situations, and to partner with us in bringing heaven to earth. Don’t lose heart. Prayer is vital. There IS hope!”
Gokey has overcome tragedy in his own life. He lost his first wife, Sophia, to heart disease. The couple had been together for 12 years, and he often credits her support for his later success.
“My first wife watched AMERICAN IDOL all the time, and one day I [in 2008] sat down with her to finally watch it,” he told Billboard. “One month later, she passed away [from complications from a congenital heart disease] before my audition, and I was devastated and felt uncomfortable. But I still went out to try it and it shaped my future. Trust me, I wanted to take a year off and go try out the next year. But that was my last opportunity to audition because of my age, and it became destiny.”
He continued, “God writes our stories, and that was one chapter that I couldn’t comprehend [at the time]. But I can look back now and say that I’m stronger because of it. A whole new opportunity opened up during that very, very difficult time. And hopefully that could be an inspiration for a lot of people — you don’t have to be defined by the darkness. It can actually catapult you towards the light.”

Singer-songwriter Danny Gokey made a promise to his wife; that he would try out for AMERICAN IDOL. But after Gokey’s wife died unexpectedly during routine heart surgery in 2009, fulfilling that promise seemed like the last thing he wanted to do.
“They gave me a private room and I yelled out loud, ‘God, you have to save her! You have to heal her! You have to. You cannot leave me alone like this!’” Gokey said on an I Am Second video.
“I made a promise that I would go try out,” Danny said. “Little did I know that when I would try out for this show, it would be a month after she passed.
As God continues to bless his music career, Gokey started a foundation called Sophia’s Heart. Gokey would later rebrand the nonprofit to Better Than I Found It and continues to aid homeless families.
“I didn’t believe Christ was enough. I believed there was Christ plus now I’ve got to do X, Y and Z. One of the most profound things that I’ve learned in my walk with Christ is that He is enough. I leaned towards Jesus more than ever before,” Gokey concluded: “It wish I could say that it was a complete change, but it’s a slow by slow change and it’s a… It’s just a everyday getting up and moving forward.”
