DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Headed For ‘New Creative Direction’

Marvel and Disney+ are looking to change up DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’s creative direction.
Variety confirmed that head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman have “parted ways” with the streaming platform and that Disney+ is on the hunt for new writers to “revamp” the existing material.
DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN is a continuation of the Netflix series DAREDEVIL, which told the story of Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind attorney and vigilante hero with super-senses.
“With less than half of the series’ 18-episode order shot prior to the beginning of the SAG-AFTRA strike, Marvel has also released the directors for the remaining episodes of the season,” Variety continued. “Some elements of the already shot material will be used going forward, but Marvel is looking to take the show in a new creative direction.”
It’s unknown why Ord and Corman were let go, but The Hollywood Reporter said sources close to the production claim the former head writers delivered “a legal procedural that did not resemble the Netflix version, known for its action and violence.”
They continued, “Cox didn’t even show up in costume until the fourth episode. Marvel, after greenlighting the concept, found itself needing to rethink the original intention of the show.”
The Hollywood Reporter also said Marvel will keep some previously-shot scenes and episodes, and Ord and Corman will remain on the show as executive producers.
Some are pointing to Marvel’s repeated stumbles at the box office and on streaming as the reason behind DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’s creative overhaul.
“Since adding a slew of Disney+ streaming series on its plate, Marvel Studios has seen its plate overfilled,” Deadline wrote. “Declining grosses, audience and critical reception on some series and films post pandemic…is coming as a wake-up call for the Kevin Feige led studio to take a greater care in quality control of their product moving forward.”
Movieguide® previously reported on DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN’s production:
DAREDEVIL fans are looking forward to the upcoming Disney+ series DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, but what can they expect from the new show?
Charlie Cox, who stars as lawyer Matt Murdock and vigilante Daredevil, shared some of his predictions about the upcoming series.
Cox reassured fans that the new show will share similarities with DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN, but that Disney+ will definitely put their own mark on the superhero.
“This character works best when he’s geared toward a slightly more mature audience,” the actor explained. “[But] my instinct is that on Disney+ it will be dark but it probably won’t be as gory.”
The original series was nominated for an Epiphany Prize® for Most Inspiring TV Program, but many viewers were turned off by the excessive violence in the show. By removing much of the violence, Disney+ and DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN will bring in a larger audience and will no doubt outperform the original series.
