Dave Coulier shares the joy of becoming a grandfather as he continues to prioritize his family above all else in his life.
“We’re so excited,” Coulier told Parade about the birth of his grandson. “My son and his wife live in California, so we’ll be making multiple trips to see that little boy.”
Coulier had previously shared that his son was going to have a baby in November of 2024. He and his wife, Melissa, have been preparing to support their son even though live half a country away — planning on making it a routine to travel from their home in Michigan to see their son in California.
Meanwhile, Coulier has focused more on his family in recent years as he has come to see just how important the are. One major step he has taken to focus on them is becoming sober for the sake of his wife.
“One day, staying at a friend’s house in Arizona — Melissa wasn’t there — I fell during a drunken stupor,” Coulier recalled in 2022. “I took a picture of myself, my face a bloody mess. ‘Your going to have to show Melissa this,’ my friend said, ‘before she sees you.’ I texted it to her, then got on the phone. I heard her crying. That’s when I knew; I have a problem. A real problem.”
Dave Coulier decided to become sober in 2018 and would soon experience a triple whammy of pain when his brother took his life, his father died and his FULL HOUSE co-star Bob Saget died, all within the span of a couple of months. While many would have turned back to alcohol to endure these experiences, Coulier is thankful he didn’t have that crutch so he was able to fully process what had happened.
“I thought to myself after those three lives were gone, I would’ve never been able to feel all of that if I was drinking, and it was really important to me to just feel that sorrow,” he explained. “There was nothing masking that, there were no layers that were covering that up. I thought to myself, ‘This is what I should be doing. I should be feeling this pain. I should be feeling this incredible love for these people.’”
“With alcohol, I was covering all that up,” he continued. “It was a real stark reminder to me that alcohol has been stealing all of those moments in my life for a long, long time.”
