Now that he is officially cancer free, Dave Coulier reflected on his battle with the disease and revealing how it caused him to refocus his life.

“I gave up a lot of fun foods. I love sushi, so I couldn’t have any raw fish because of the bacterial levels that can exist, and my body wouldn’t be able to fight it off,” the FULL HOUSE star told Parade. “I was a big dessert guy. I always celebrated. If we’re going out to dinner, I’m having dessert because we’re out: ‘This is special.’”

“I’m a firm believer that what you put into your body is exactly what you’ll get back,” Coulier continued. “So, I’ve completely cut out all sugar. Because of my age and because I still like to play ice hockey, I had a lot of inflammation, and once I stopped sugar, it was gone in a matter of seven days.”

Though Coulier is thankful for the changes he has seen since changing his eating habits, these changes did not come easily. However, his wife was his biggest supporter throughout his cancer battle and understood just how much of a difference diet can make. Shortly before his diagnosis, she launched a holistic wellness company, which partially focuses on better eating to help people improve their health.

“She has put together a whole nutrition plan for me,” Dave Coulier told PEOPLE last November, even noting at that time that the largest change was cutting out sugar.

Along with receiving care from his wife, Coulier was supported by his friends, including John Stamos — who FaceTimed him every day to check in on him — and Candace Cameron Bure, who lifted him to the Lord in prayer every day.

“I told Dave and Mel, the best way I can support you is to pray for you every day, because you know that my faith is strong,” Bure recalled telling Coulier. “And I feel like that’s where my strength lies, in prayer. So, I’ll be praying every single day.”

“A cancer diagnosis is so difficult. And it felt very devastating when Dave and Melissa [Coulier] called and let us all know personally before it went out to press,” she added. “But we know that the cancer that he has is very treatable. And many people have gone into remission for many, many years from that. So, you know, it was like the best diagnosis you can get from devastating news, in that sense. It feels very hopeful.”
