Dave and Jenny Marrs shared some behind-the-scenes secrets about the production of their HGTV show FIXER TO FABULOUS.

“[Filming] is pretty crazy. It’s mass chaos. It’s nonstop during filming season,” Jenny said while the couple spoke at St. Bernard Catholic Church’s men’s club breakfast.

“When you’re filming, it’s a long day,” Dave added. “Because you’re having to smile and be present the entire time.”

The couple shared that every 43-minute episode is cut down from 120 hours of film, meaning the majority of the shots they take will never air. To help the episode feel like it is taking place over a longer timespan, Jenny will even pack changes of clothes so she can wear different outfits on the same day. The renovations, however, take place during an expedited period, being completed in roughly two months, when the average renovation takes a full year.

They recently wrapped filming on Season 6, with Jenny celebrating “Today was our last day of shooting for Season 6!”

Despite the intensity of this work, Dave and Jenny are extremely grateful for the opportunity they have been given by HGTV and know they are incredibly fortunate to be coming up on 100 episodes of their show.

The first episode of FIXER TO FABULOUS aired in 2017 and was an instant success, causing HGTV to immediately order a full season. The network typically films 70 to 80 pilot episodes a year, with 10 to 12 moving on from there. Perhaps part of the Marrses’ continued success comes from the fact that they never wanted to be TV stars. They turned down the offer to film a pilot three times before starting their show as not to interfere with their ability to parent. And, although they enjoy the platform their fame has given them, they do not hold on to it too tightly.

“We didn’t think we’d be doing it this long,” Dave said. “We feel like it’s a ministry. We feel like when we’re not supposed to do the show anymore, God will say, ‘I’m closing this door and opening another one.’”

For now, they use the platform that God has given them to encourage their fans and share the Gospel with them whenever there is a chance.
