Dennis Quaid Shares How the Holy Spirit Is at Work in Him
By Movieguide® Contributor
In an exclusive interview with K-Love, Movieguide® award nominee Dennis Quaid explained why it’s important to show our scars.
“That’s what makes us human,” Quaid began. “We’re all human, we’re not perfect. And I think it actually turns people away from church and fellowship with people because then they’re embarrassed to talk about their weaknesses because their supposed to be perfect.”
“That’s the Good News that he came here to tell us about,” he continued. “Just give all that to me and in that it’s [a] way of experiencing heaven on earth. Right here the Kingdom of Heaven is spread out upon the earth upon man, but man doesn’t see it because he looks through it from a lens of sin. Having that wiped away gives you that inner feeling there’s the Holy Spirit right at work within you.”
Quaid has previously shared about the transformation God brought to his life. In an interview, he told PEOPLE that, early in his career, he checked himself into rehab for a drug addiction.
“I remember going home and having kind of a white light experience that I saw myself either dead or in jail or losing everything I had, and I didn’t want that,” he recalled.
From there, he began searching for truth, exploring the Bible, the Bhagavad Gita and the Quran before returning to his Christian roots.
“That’s when I started developing a personal relationship,” he said. “Before that, I didn’t have one, even though I grew up as a Christian.”
The actor opened up more about his faith through his recent album “Fallen: A Gospel Record for Sinners.”
“Quaid…vulnerably acknowledges these personal struggles and his subsequent return to Christianity on songs like the title track,” a press release said.
The album has earned him two Grammy Award nominations: Best Gospel Performance/Song category for his track “Fallen” and Best Roots Gospel Album.
Movieguide® recently reported on Quaid:
Actor and musician Dennis Quaid joined Christian singer Matthew West to discuss how the redemptive power of Jesus led him to create his new album “Fallen: A Gospel Record For Sinners.”
“I myself went to Sunday school in church and around 12 or 13 I got very disillusioned with church,” he said. “It didn’t seem to match up with reality of life around me. A lot of things seemed hypocritical…”
“It’s not really about living a Boy Scout kind of life and doing good and being good,” he explained. “There are certainly good deeds and all, and that’s great. But it’s about who you are really inside. It’s not a scorecard or a check the box or gold star. It’s about your real relationship with Him and that’s what everybody is looking for. It’s always accessible and it’s so surprisingly simple.”
