When asked to speak to the University of Colorado Boulder football team, actor Denzel Washington opened up about the most important thing in his life: God.

“In all that I say, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in God’s sight,” he began his remarks to the team.

Washington explained how his dedication to God has ebbed and flowed, but God has remained faithful.

“I rejected God. I hated God. I loved God. I appreciated God. I’ve had no patience with God, and God has had nothing but patience with me. That’s why they call it grace,” he said.

For the rising athletes, he shared some wisdom he’s learned from his decades-long Hollywood career.

“We all have different platforms. Some will be stars. Some will never be stars. We all have a purpose in our life, and I’m here to tell you, God did not put you here to play football,” Washington reminded the Buffaloes. “He gave you that gift, but that’s not your purpose in life because one knee, one shoulder, one ankle, one Achilles, one concussion can end that.”

Throughout our lives, God will change our direction in ways that will bring glory to Him. Washington has seen that first hand.

“I never wanted to be an actor. I never thought about acting. I didn’t know any actors, but I found out very quickly that that was my God-given ability, and I found out over this 40-50-year career that it was my God-given purpose,” he said. “God did not put me on this planet to act; God put me on this planet to preach.”

He took that God-given gift to the next level late last year when he received his minister’s license.

“It took a while, but I’m finally here…If [God] can do this for me, there’s nothing He can’t do for you,” Washington said early in January. “The sky literally is the limit.”

The A-lister has become more vocal about his faith recently, telling Esquire “I don’t care what anyone thinks. See, talking about the fear part of it — you can’t talk like that and win Oscars. You can’t talk like that and party. You can’t say that in this town.”

“It’s my job to lift God up, to give Him praise, to make sure that anyone and everyone I speak to the rest of my life understands that He is responsible for me,” Washington added.
