Derek Hough Calls Wife ‘A Miracle’ After Health Scare
By Movieguide® Contributor
Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert have had a difficult first year of marriage after a major health scare, however, through the trials, they are more in love than ever.
Erbert was hospitalized last December after suffering a cranial hematoma, a serious brain bleed that can lead to death if not immediately treated. Thankfully doctors were able to stop the bleed during an emergency craniectomy, and she has had a strong recovery in the nine months since the emergency.
“During that time, I was realizing how important she is not just in my love, my life, but just in everyday things,” Hough told GOOD MORNING AMERICA in February. “I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t even know how to do that,’ or ‘I don’t know how to ask,’ Hayley does, that’s how reliant you are on her…It was a moment to step up for sure. In many, many ways. I thought she was strong. And I had no idea. I actually had no idea how strong she was really until just a couple months ago.”
“She’s a miracle,” Hough added during a recent interview with E! News. “She really is and I don’t say that lightly.”
The medical emergency has since caused the couple to reflect on the fleetingness of life and work towards the things they have realized are most important in life.
“We actually read each other our vows again where we got married on this cliffside in Carmel overlooking the ocean,” Hough said, explaining how they celebrated their anniversary. “And it was really emotional because we were reading the vows and thinking like, ‘Wow, we really put these to the test.’”
“We definitely want to have a family eventually,” he added. “We’ll see what’s in the cards, what’s on the horizon. Little dancing children running around.”
Until then, Hough and Erbert will continue to enjoy life together and cherish the time they have been given with a new light on its value.

Derek Hough knows that his wife Hayley Erbert’s recovery has been nothing less than a miracle.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, the DANCING WITH THE STARS alum shared his thoughts on her recovery from an emergency craniotomy and cranioplasty.
“It’s nothing short of a miracle, honestly,” he said. “Both Hayley and I’ve shared our gratitude towards the medical professionals and everybody that was just so on top of their game and just did the best they could and did an incredible job.”
Doctors originally believed that Erbert would suffer permanent damage, but to their surprise, no long-term damage was found.
