Hayley Erbert is doing well now over a year after her emergency craniotomy and recently shared that she and her husband, Derek Hough, plan to release a documentary about her health scare.

“We’re still in the process right now of finishing it up,” Hough shared at Elton John’s Oscar viewing party. “But it’s actually beautiful.”

“I just watched some things back from it and I’m like, just seeing her hair and where she’s come. It’s amazing. We can’t wait to share it with everybody. It’s really special,” he said.

Erbert added, “It’s been a wild journey, to say the least.”

In December 2023, Erbert underwent an emergency craniotomy and cranioplasty after a blood vessel burst in her brain while on the couple’s “Symphony of Dance” tour in Washington D.C. She and Hough had marred just months earlier.

“During that time, I was realizing how important she is not just in my love, my life, but just in everyday things,” Hough said a few months after the incident. “I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t even know how to do that,’ or ‘I don’t know how to ask,’ Hayley does, that’s how reliant you are on her…It was a moment to step up for sure. In many, many ways. I thought she was strong. And I had no idea. I actually had no idea how strong she was really until just a couple months ago.”

Erbert returned to the stage, though, and the couple shared a glimpse of their journey when she and Hough returned to DANCING WITH THE STARS in October for the “Dedication” night.

“When they played the package, that’s when I started losing it, because I actually haven’t seen a lot of the footage in quite some time because I’ve just been focusing on progressing every single day,” Erbert told PEOPLE about watching a pre-recorded video by Hough that played before the performance. “And so to go back to that, I was just flooded with emotions, but it was extremely special to be out here.”

At the end of 2024, she took a moment to reflect on everything she experienced that year.

“So many mixed emotions and feelings about this entire year,” she captioned an Instagram post. “I have never experienced more struggle and heartbreak in my life while simultaneously feeling so much growth, love, and purpose. This year was far from easy, but it was so necessary. Grateful for every moment; the hard ones, the beautiful ones, and everything in between. Here’s to carrying these lessons into the next chapter.”
