DESCENDANTS Return for Fifth Installment in the Popular Franchise
By Movieguide® Contributor
Chloe and Red, daughters of Cinderella and the Queen of Hearts, respectively, discover the “consequences when you alter the fabric of time” as they return to modern times following the Disney movie DESCENDANTS: THE RISE OF RED.
The yet-to-be-named fifth DESCENDANTS movie, which follows the children of Disney’s most famous (and infamous) characters, is set to start production soon.
“The love for the DESCENDANTS franchise runs deep, and the incredible response to DESCENDANTS: THE RISE OF RED last year proved just how much fans are invested in these characters and their stories,” President of Disney Branded Television Ayo Davis said in a press release.
“Our next movie will build on that legacy and deliver even more of the magic, music and heart that make DESCENDANTS so special — brought to life by an amazing cast and creative team who continue to elevate this world in new and exciting ways,” she continued.
Kylie Cantrall returns as Princess Red and Malia Baker as Chloe, as well as Leonardo Lam as Maddox Hatter. Some new characters will be introduced as well, including Red’s sister Pink (Liamani Segura), Max Hatter (Brendon Tremblay), Luis Madrigal (Alexandro Byrd) and Hazel Hook (Kiara Romero).
Kimmy Gatewood will direct the upcoming flick, with Tamara Chestna, who is also co-executive producer, Dan Frey and Ru Somner serving as screenwriters.
It’s no surprise that the franchise was greenlit for a fifth installment with RISE OF RED being the most watched original movie with kids 6 to 11 last year.
The soundtracks to the musical series has been a hit as well, with the soundtrack to the first two movies going gold and the third and fourth movies reaching No. 1 in the Billboard’s Soundtrack and Children’s Album charts.
Steven Vincent, Senior Vice President of Music and Soundtrack, shared the creators’ approach to the musical numbers in the movies.
“The music is only in the film to support the story on the characters, we never want to stop the movie to just sing and dance for a couple of minutes so it’s really about creating music that takes them on that journey,” Vincent explained.
How many DESCENDANTS movies will there be? The possibilities are endless ,says China Anne McClain, who plays Uma in RISE OF RED.
“DESCENDANTS is a franchise that’s really never meant to end. It’s always meant to keep going because there are so many villains and they all have children, and also there are always new Disney Princesses being introduced, you know, and very creative people coming up with a bunch of different characters,” McClain said.
“So it’s really something that could go on forever. That’s always how I’ve seen it. It’s huge, and I’m very happy to be a part of it,” she added.
