A new set of campers is joining the HOLES universe — the new Disney+ HOLES series is set to star Greg Kinnear, Aidy Bryant and Shay Rudolph.

Teddy bear Award® winner Kinnear will lead as The Warden at Camp Yucca, where he has girls dig holes for an undisclosed reason. Rudolph stars as Hayley, a new arrival at the camp after being falsely accused of committing a crime, Deadline reported April 22.

“Truly speechless!!!! 🩷 being part of this project means everything to me 🦂🌵🕳️ proud to bring this story to life and SO ready to DIG SOME HOLES,” Rudolph shared on Instagram Tuesday.

The series is based on Louis Sachar’s book of the same name. The logline reads, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl (Rudolph) is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden (Kinnear) forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.”

Bryant stars as camp counselor Sissy, an example to the campers and The Warden’s right-hand woman. Flor Delis Alicea will star as ringleader Queenie, Anire Kim Amoda as tough girl Thumbelina, Noah Cottrell as kitchen boy Kitch, and Iesha Daniels plays Mars, a lesbian with a big brain.

Sophie Dieterlen plays Sticky, a fashionista; Alexandra Doke plays Eyeball, an eccentric artist; and Maeve Press plays Shrimp, a character with small stature and a blunt personality.

The series is written by Alina Mankin. Liz Phang is the showrunner, and AGATHA ALL ALONG’s Jac Schaeffer will direct. Phang and Mankin executive produce with Drew Goddard, Andrea Massaro and Sarah Esberg of Goddard Textiles. Mike Medavoy will produce. Julia Friley will oversee the project for Walden Media, which was behind the 2003 HOLES movie with Shia LeBeouf.

Movieguide®’s review of the 2003 movie reads, “There are a lot of Christian messages here, from the stream of life-giving water, to carrying your brother’s burdens, to sacrificing your life for others, and many positive allegorical touches. However, there are also some plot elements that seem to belie the refutation of the fortune teller’s curse… At the very end of the movie, after the credits, little Zeroni pronounces a curse on the audience.”

A release date for the pilot has not been announced yet.

With lots of gender swapping, zero familiar faces or characters, and, not to forget the politically correct elements, this series is going to be a far cry from the movie and classic book many of us grew up watching and reading.

It makes you wonder if anything will go by the book…Will there even be a “Yelnats” family legacy in this story?
