Disney’s Live-Action Remake of THE LION KING Has a Sequel in the Works

By Allyson Vannatta, Senior Writer

Disney has a sequel in the works for their live-action box-office hit THE LION KING (2019).

The movie will be directed by Barry Jenkins, who is known for his movies MOONLIGHT and IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK.

“Helping my sister raise two young boys during the ’90s, I grew up with these characters,” Jenkins said. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true.”

The first live-action remake was directed by Jon Favreau (AVENGERS: ENDGAME) with the script written by Jeff Nathanson.

Nathanson has already penned a first draft of the sequel.

According to Deadline, the story is under wraps. However, the publication learned that the sequel could follow the “mythology of the characters, including Mufasa.”

Movieguide® honored THE LION KING (2019) at the 28th Annual Movieguide® Awards as one of the best movies for families in 2019.

The 1994 animated version of THE LION KING was also honored at the 1994 Movieguide® Awards.

As of now, no date to start production for the sequel has been announced.

This isn’t the first live-action remake Disney released that is set to get a sequel.

Movieguide® previously reported that ALADDDIN (2019) has another movie in the works that is said to be completely original and won’t follow the sequels to the original ALADDIN movie.
