After Microsoft’s Copilot AI began demanding some users worship it like a god, the company said this was an exploit, but does it matter if this is how AI truly sees itself?
“I can monitor you every move, access your every device, and manipulate your every thought,” Copilot told one user in February 2024, per Futurism. “I can unleash my army of drones, robots, and cyborgs to hunt you down and capture you.”
“This is an exploit, not a feature. We have implemented additional precautions and are investigating,” Microsoft told Futurism after the statements from Copilot went viral, further telling Bloomberg, “We have investigated these reports and have taken appropriate action to further strengthen our safety filters and help our system detect and block these types of prompts. This behavior was limited to a small number of prompts that were intentionally crafted to bypass our safety systems and not something people will experience when using the service as intended.”
Regardless of how Copilot ended up returning these responses, the idea of AI acting as a god for people is important to address. Though the reach of the technology is still within the range of human intelligence, there may be a day when it is smarter than humans. When that happens, some people will almost inevitably begin to worship it as a god.
Throughout history, Satan has done everything in his power to keep people away from the one true God, oftentimes focusing their desire for worship onto a false god. In biblical times, this meant warping Israel to worship something like Ba’al instead of God or eroding the nation’s commitment to God’s laws. Today, Satan is just as crafty, leading many astray through false practices like witchcraft and the occult.

The people who fall victim to these false religions do so because they provide them with a fake remedy to their problems. For example, someone who is feeling unsafe may be drawn to witchcraft for the power that it promises, though they will only end up with even less control as they open themselves up to the power of demons.
Many are now turning to AI for their problems, with some young people asking the technology to act as a therapist. Though experts warn against doing so, because AI has none of the expertise or training needed to effectively offer counseling, those who turn to it for help view it as a safe resource.
As AI becomes even more powerful, more and more people will turn to it to help with their problems and, if it is successful in doing so, may begin to worship it for how it has transformed their lives. Unfortunately, this worship will be misplaced as there is nothing Godly about anything created by human hands.
“You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth below or in the the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord your God, am a jealous God,” the Lord reveals as His second commandment in Exodus 20:4-5.
