Does DC Director Have Plans for Other Comic Book Projects?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Director and writer James Gunn doesn’t plan on leaving the world of DC superheroes any time soon.
The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY director answered a fan on Threads who asked if he has plans to direct any more DCU projects in the future.
“Yes, after I’m further down the road with [SUPERMAN, PEACEMAKER and CREATURE COMMANDOS], there will be [other projects],” Gunn replied.
Gunn didn’t reveal which DC heroes and villains he might be bringing to the big (or small) screen, and it’s hard to make any predictions — the filmmaker is known for spotlighting more obscure comic book characters in his adaptations.
There’s plenty going on in the world of DC these days. Gunn recently welcomed two new faces to the comic book cinematic universe.
“Welcome to the DCU, Kyle Chandler! Now our Hal Jordan in #Lanterns,” he posted on Instagram. Hal Jordan is also known as the Green Lantern, and LANTERNS is an upcoming TV series adaptation of the popular character’s story.
Gunn also welcomed Aaron Pierre to the LANTERNS cast, writing, “After a long and grueling series of auditions I am absolutely sure we’ve found an incredible John Stewart.”
He and co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran recently celebrated the premiere of THE PENGUIN, a Max series spin-off of the popular THE BATMAN.
“Last night Peter and I went to the #Penguin premiere, the first DC Studios production,” Gunn posted on Instagram. “A wonderful time with a wonderful cast and crew. We screened the first episode, deftly directed by Craig Zobel, luminously acted by the amazing Colin Farrell, @cristinmilioti & more. And then the party – which would have been the best part if not for the episode itself.”
A portion of the Movieguide® review for the first episode of THE PENGUIN reads:
THE PENGUIN is incredibly well-made, featuring incredible performances from Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. The series has beautiful cinematography, emphasizing the gritty, noir feel of the series and a storyline that will compel viewers. Batman and the noir crime genre fans will enjoy the first episode. The series contains objectionable content, specifically extreme violence and strong foul language. It features a slightly Paganistic worldview, as all the characters only act in their own interests and won’t hesitate to hurt and kill others if it serves their agenda. MOVIEGUIDE® advises extreme caution for all viewers.
His most anticipated upcoming project, however, is undoubtedly SUPERMAN. Movieguide® previously reported:
James Gunn thanked Cleveland for being such a great host while filming took place in the city and revealed that the shoot for the movie has almost been completed.
“Today we are leaving you (Cleveland) after six amazing weeks of shooting,” Gunn wrote on social media. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how grateful they were we were shooting in their city – not once, not twice, but dozens of times.
“The wonderful background actors on the film were always so fun and funny and they clapped after takes, something that reminded us Hollywood cynics why we make movies in the first place,” Gunn continued. “The pride you feel in being the city where Jerry and Joe first created Superman was invigorating. You exemplify his spirit. But just as much it’s the pride you have in your community, your hometown, your radio stations and restaurants and gathering places that touched me…”
SUPERMAN is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
