DANCING WITH THE STARS Season 33 Premieres with Strong Viewership

By Movieguide® Contributor

The DANCING WITH THE STARS (DWTS) Season 33 premiere found a larger audience than last season’s, enjoying significant growth with the younger audience.

DWTS Season 33 premiered to an audience of 4.97 million, a 4% increase from Season 32’s premiere last fall, per Deadline. The show also grew 14% year-over-year with the 18-49 demographic. DWTS previously saw a boost with this group towards the end of last season through a “Taylor Swift night.”

While there is a wide variety of stars dancing this season, many found their fame from the Olympics or through work with Netflix. These contestants include gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik, rugby player Ilona Maher, actor Chandler Kinney, actor Tori Spelling and con artist Anna Delvey whose story was the basis for the show INVENTING ANNA.

Other stars include former NFL wide receiver Danny Amendola, THE BACHELOR star Joey Graziadei, NBA star Dwight Howard, model Brooks Nader, REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA star Phaedra Parks, actor Eric Roberts, THE BACHELORETTE star Jenn Tran and actor Reginald Veljohnson.

The first episode of the season saw contestant dancing to the song of their choice that they felt represented them or the pro they are partnered with. To give them a chance to learn the ropes and have fun in their first competition, episode one did not include any eliminations, however, episode two will see two contestants going home to keep the competition on track.

This season is hosted by Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro and is judged by Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.

Chandler Kinney and Dwight Howard held the top two spots after the first episode, while Eric Roberts and Reginald Veljohnson ranked in the bottom slots.

Movieguide® previously reported on Hough:

Derek Hough knows that his wife Hayley Erbert’s recovery has been nothing less than a miracle.

In an interview with Fox News Digital, the DANCING WITH THE STARS alum shared his thoughts on her recovery from an emergency craniotomy and cranioplasty.

“It’s nothing short of a miracle, honestly,” he said. “Both Hayley and I’ve shared our gratitude towards the medical professionals and everybody that was just so on top of their game and just did the best they could and did an incredible job.”

Doctors originally believed that Erbert would suffer permanent damage, but to their surprise, no long-term damage was found.

“Hypothetically or even metaphorically, we felt this beautiful energy from everybody, and it was really special. I think that each day there’s a win, there’s a triumph, there’s a step forward. I think the hardest thing is reliving some of those moments. They kind of creep up and pop up in your head. I think they’re so difficult,” Hough told Fox News Digital.
