HGTV Stars Say They’re ‘Better as a Team’ When Parenting

Some might prefer solo parenting, but HOME TOWN’s Ben and Erin Napier say they’re “better as a team.”
“I love my husband, but sometimes it’s easier when I do it solo because I can just be the boss,” Jenna Bush Hager said during an episode of TODAY WITH HODA & JENNA.
Erin replied, “No, it doesn’t work for me. We’re always together as a family of four. Mommy and Daddy are one unit.”
Ben explained that, because he and Erin work together, they have the same schedules. This means when one of them is gone, everything gets thrown out of whack.
“We’re just better as a team,” Erin concluded.
She discussed the topic further on an episode of the DADVILLE podcast, saying, “I feel like all of my friends are incredibly good at solo momming because their husbands work in a different location from them and so they are used to doing things on their own.”
“But if I have to solo mom without [Ben] for even an hour or two hours, the girls really misbehave and are different,” she continued. “As long as Daddy is there, they stay balanced and really sweet.”
Ben added that “it’s the same” for him “if [Erin’s] not there,” saying, “They don’t like it to have just one of us.”

The HGTV stars have also spoken about their “army of support” that helps them out with daughters Helen, 6, and Mae, 2, when they’re at work — specifically, when they head out of town to one of their HOME TOWN TAKEOVER locations.
“We bring one of our moms every time we come,” Ben shared, with Erin joking, “And our moms don’t hate it either.”
The Napiers added that the HOME TOWN crew is like a big extended family after so many years together, which adds to the fun for their kids. HOME TOWN veteran Jonathan Walters joined the crew for HOME TOWN TAKEOVER Season 3, and the Napiers saw it as a reunion.
“Our kids were little babies at the same time, we shared diapers,” Ben said of Walters and his family. “And now, the kids can do so much. We were just at one of the houses, doing gardening, and our kids were helping us paint garden signs.”
