Erin Napier Calls Out Insensitive ‘Mom Humor’: ‘Would Love to See Less of This’

By Allen Rushing

Erin Napier recently spoke out on Instagram about the insensitive nature of “mom humor”, the star of HGTV’s HOME TOWN taking a counter-cultural stance against a cultural commonplace.

“Instagram is always showing me videos of ‘mom humor’ where the moms are glib and whining about life with little children. Would love to see less of this,” Napier, who shares daughters Helen, 5 and Mae, 1, with husband and co-star Ben Napier, wrote.

I know the difficulties and stresses of motherhood are real and taxing,” she continued, “but there are so many women in the world struggling w[ith] infertility who would kill to have that life. Let’s flip it on its ear and keep in mind how fleeting and special this hectic time is.”

Leigh Blickley, writing in a January 18 article for Scary Mommy, would seem to have missed the important point which Napier makes. There are far too many negative presentations of motherhood and family in our current postmodern culture, whether it be “mom humor”, “dad jokes”, or some other cultural commonplace practice which, to a greater or lesser degree, denigrates motherhood, fatherhood, the joy of children, or the biblical family as a whole.

Napier, mother of 2 girls, speaks for many who desire U.S. culture to embrace and honor God’s design in the family. She is joined by many, such as actress Jill Wagner, who has discovered the deep fulfillment of motherhood. As Movieguide® reported in a January 17, 2023 article:

The Movieguide® Grace Prize® nominee continued, “It’s such a beautiful time. And I don’t know, I just feel so lucky that I get to experience this in my lifetime because I didn’t know if I was going to…because I had my kids late in life.”

When she found out she was pregnant with both of her daughters, Wagner was overjoyed, calling them “a gift from God.”

“What a blessing,” Wagner concluded. “I just feel so lucky to be a mom.”

On all fronts of the culture wars raging in the U.S. today, it is hoped that more and more people will come to the conclusion that family, motherhood, fatherhood, and children are God-given gifts to be treasured rather than seen as at best, an inconvenience, and at worst, things to avoid.
