ESPN Launches Exclusive SportsCenter Show on Disney+

By Movieguide® Contributor

ESPN launched a new SportsCenter show yesterday, March 3, exclusively on Disney+.

The show is called SC+ and highlights each day’s top sports stories, commentary and insights in a “fast-paced” style “designed for a more casual, entertainment-focused audience.” It’s modeled after the SC Top 10 sports moments countdown. Gary Striewski and Randy Scott will host weekdays and anchor ET SportsCenter’s 7 a.m. show. Hannah Storm and Jay Harris will host on weekends.

“It’s an absolute honor to take one of ESPN’s most-prestigious and historic brands in SportsCenter and infuse it with the energy and creativity afforded by Disney+,” said Mike Foss, Senior Vice President of Studio & Entertainment. “SC+ endeavors to tell the best stories in sports daily in an unforgettable way. This fresh approach, combined with the expansive reach of Disney+, will resonate whether you are an ardent sports fan or looking for something new after your latest series binge.”

“ESPN has long defined excellence in sports programming, and now Disney+ subscribers will have daily access to the most exciting sports news, moments, and stories,” said Alisa Bowen, President of Disney+.

The show will live stream on weekday mornings at 9 a.m. ET and will be available on demand for 24 hours. Each episode will be a minimum of 15 minutes and will vary in length.

Like the ESPN tile, which came to Disney+ in December, SC+ comes as part of Disney’s strategy to weave sports content into its basic customer base. The idea is that once customers get a small taste of sports, they’ll want more, thus subscribing to — and paying more for — the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle.

With SC+, Disney+ subscribers have access to a limited selection of ESPN+ and Hulu. Disney+/Hulu/ESPN subscribers get access to all ESPN+ content with over 30,000 live sports events and a large on-demand library.

Meanwhile, Fox is also trying to build a sports and news streaming network that expects to launch this year. And Netflix, which has already live streamed some sports events, is hoping to secure rights to Formula 1 broadcasts this year.
