Family-Friendly Content ‘Critically Important’ to Streaming Services, Report Finds

By Movieguide® Contributor

A new report finds that kids and family-friendly content are “critically important” to streaming services.

“Kids represent a unique demographic for the entertainment industry,” CNBC wrote. “Age-specific advertising laws mean companies can’t market directly to them in many cases, but their viewing habits — often favoring repetition of content — makes them exceptionally loyal consumers.”

Peter Csathy, founder and chair of advisory firm Creative Media, added, “Kids and family-friendly content is critically important to both streaming acquisition and retention. Franchise family-friendly brands are welcomed by exhausted parents looking for some down time as their kids get their screen time.”

“Once those kids are hooked on a show, they never leave and will not let their parents even think of leaving,” he concluded.

CNBC’s report noted that children’s content is also cheaper for streamers in the long run, as kids are happy to watch the same movies and shows over and over again. This means the streaming services don’t need to license or create as much content each month to keep their interest.

Despite this information, a study from the Parents Television and Media Council found that “adult-only original entertainment on streaming services outnumbers TV-G or TV-PG rated content by nearly 270%.”

“Seeing that less than 15% of titles on the major streamers is reportedly family-friendly, seems to me that most major streamers don’t fully embrace this reality,” Csathy said

The PTC is calling on streaming services to generate more family-friendly content.

“As our data points out, you could probably watch the entire catalog of G and PG-rated programming that’s available across the multitude of streaming services within a year,” PTC vice president Melissa Henson told The Christian Post. “There is just so little that is out there, and then, where are families left to go?”

Movieguide® previously reported on WarnerMedia’s efforts to increase their output of family-oriented shows and movies:

As streamers continue to battle for audiences, WarnerMedia adds weekly ‘ACME Night’ for family-friendly content through their Kids & Family branch— inspired by the corporation seen most often classic ROAD RUNNER cartoon.

WarnerMedia Kids & Family announced the new block would air movies on Sundays at 6 p.m. ET/PT.

According to Deadline, a recent lineup of movies for the new slot includes MAN OF STEEL, TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, SHERLOCK GNOMES, SCOOB!, AND DETECTIVE PIKACHU.

“In the world of ACME anything, and I do mean anything, is possible,” Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics President Tom Ascheim, said. “We know families want to spend time together, so we’ve created a destination for multigenerational stories that pull families together through the power of imagination.”
