‘Focus On Fatherhood’: Why Singer-Songwriter Niko Moon Got Sober

Singer-songwriter Niko Moon is opening up about his sobriety journey and the importance of mental health.

“I didn’t really realize what I was doing, and I just kind of became an alcoholic,” Moon told The Tennessean of his struggles with alcohol, which started after a tough breakup.

The artist explained that being in the music industry didn’t help, as “sometimes your office is a bar.”

“And so you’re in that environment, and you’re going through heartbreak, and you don’t know how to deal with it,” Moon continued. “You know, it’s a pretty natural thing.”

His sobriety journey has been a process, with Moon only drinking socially for the past four years. Six months ago, the singer-songwriter cut out alcohol completely to “focus on his career and fatherhood.”

“I think that I’m in a place where it’s time to move on to the next chapter of life,” he shared. “Without alcohol.”

Moon is now working to promote the importance of mental health with his nonprofit, the Happy Cowboy Foundation, which will launch in January 2024.

“I think that mental health is a lot like physical health, sometimes we all get a little out of shape,” he explained. “And when you need to, get some help from someone who is trained in helping you untangle the mind.”

Moon recently left his label, RCA Nashville/Sony Music Nashville, to focus on being an independent artist.

“Sony is and will always be the team that helped launch this career and journey I am on, and I am thankful for that,” he said in a statement. “With the very changing scope of music today, I want the undeniable ability to take my music in any direction possible and deliver it to my fans at a pace that suits me more as a touring artist.”

In an interview with Forbes, Moon explained, “I’ve always dreamed about being able to play music in a big way where it would be on the radio. I’ve always loved people, wanted to connect with people and to be able to do that is a dream come true and something I don’t take for granted for a moment. Every day I wake up feeling so blessed to have this life where I get to make music for people.”
