Former NFL Star Mike Singletary: ‘God Didn’t Give Us A Spirit Of Fear’

Former NFL linebacker Mike Singletary is crediting his faith for helping him overcome his fears as he competes on the CBS reality show BEYOND THE EDGE.
“The biggest [challenge] I had was sleeping,” Singletary said. “I just felt like I don’t care what happens during the day. If I can see it, I can do something about it, I can react. But when I’m sleeping, that’s the thing I was concerned about.”
Singletary shared that he relied on his faith in God to help him battle his fears of the dark jungle.
“I just began to pray about it. ‘Lord, what do I fear here?’” the former football player explained. “God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a strong mind to be able to realize, ‘Hey, God created this.’
“That jungle I was in, and all the animals and everything else,” he continued. “My Father created this. This is part of my domain, and I can walk differently. I don’t have to walk like I own the place, but take a stick and protect yourself if you have to. But, it was a kind of transformation while I was there, in that process.”
Singletary overcame his fears to compete for a very good cause. BEYOND THE EDGE features all-celebrity contestants who are playing to raise money for various charities. The football star’s charity is Changing Our Perspective, which attempts to fight the “educational and social-emotional disparities plaguing America’s youth by incentivizing consistency and rewarding effort.”
The organization’s website explains that they hope to “equip and empower adolescents with the ability to thrive autonomously as students and ultimately as the next generation of leaders.”
Singletary played for the Chicago Bears and was part of their Super Bowl XX championship team that beat the New England Patriots. Singletary was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1998.
Singletary went on to coach the San Francisco 49ers.
