How God Miraculously ‘Took Away’ This Rock Star’s Desire for Drugs
By Movieguide® Contributor
Rock star Alice Cooper is opening up about how God performed a miracle by making him sober.
“I woke up one morning, threw up blood,” Cooper told Greg Laurie on PRAISE. Cooper’s wife, “Sheryl, goes, ‘Party’s over.’”
That wasn’t the first time that happened, but it was the first time Sheryl witnessed it. She and Cooper’s manager, Shep Gordon, held an intervention. They told him, “We couldn’t love you more, and this is tough love.”
Then “I was in an institute, you know, to stop. And you know what? After two days, I felt great.”
“But I kept going, ‘When I get outta here I’m gonna go back to my thing and it’s going to be everywhere.’ I came out of there, never once had a fallback,” the artist explained. “Never fell back on alcohol. Never fell back on drugs.”
Though Cooper had been a long-time drug and alcohol abuser, he felt that God had completely wiped out his desire for substances.

“People say, ‘You’re a cured alcoholic.’ And I go, ‘No, I was a healed alcoholic.’ God took it away from me,” he explained. “Even the doctor said, ‘It’s impossible that you don’t at least fall of the wagon at least three or four times because you’re the classic alcoholic.’ And I said is ‘What you don’t understand is God took it away from me…It’s a miracle.’”
“After a while, they went, ‘You know what? God took it away from you.’ Because they said, ‘Everything about your life should be deception. That’s [what] an alcoholic and a drug addict does. They put on this air that they’re cured, but back here they’re doing this and they’re doing that.’ That never happened.”
Eventually, even Cooper’s doctors admitted it must be a miracle.
“I said, ‘Well, God works like that,’” Cooper explained to them.
Before Cooper sobered up, he lived his life so recklessly that he and his friends never thought he’d live past 30, let alone his current age — he turns 77 on Feb. 4.
“But I quit drinking and taking drugs very successfully,” he said in 2023. “I’ve been happily married for 47 years, so all the stress is out of my life. Stress kills people faster than anything else – worrying about money, career. I’ve nothing to prove anymore.”
“I never went to AA,” he continued. “When I came out of the hospital…it was like a Biblical miracle and, being a religious person, I look at it like God took it away from me. But the guys in Aerosmith were in AA every day, and I really admired that.”
Movieguide® previously reported Cooper’s testimony:
“I knew that there had to either come a point where I either accepted Christ and started living that life, or, if I died in this, I was in a lot of trouble,” Cooper said. “That’s what really motivated me. I just got to a point of saying I’m tired of this life and I know that [God] is right. When the Lord opens your eyes and you suddenly realize who you are and who He is, oh, it’s a whole different world.”
