‘God Using Me in a Different Way’: Prayers Continue for Damar Hamlin Across NFL

By Movieguide® Contributor

Continued prayer and support for Buffalo Bill’s safety Damar Hamlin appeared across the NFL this weekend, less than a week after Hamlin’s on-field collapse from cardiac arrest.

After his collapse sparked millions of people to prayer, the 24-year-old player has shown steady signs of improvement as he recovered at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Although he couldn’t play on Sunday, Hamlin tweeted that God is using him in a “different way.”

CBN News reports, “the Bills scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff against the New England Patriots paying tribute to Hamlin, and Indianapolis Colts safety Rodney Thomas celebrated Hamlin’s ongoing recovery by running to the third-yard line after snagging an interception against Houston Texans quarterback Davis Mills.”

Other players supported Hamlin through on-field prayer.

“The Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans bowed down in the middle of the football field to pray for Hamlin during Saturday’s game. And Derwin James and Russell Wilson both wore number 3 and prayed on the field before the Broncos-Chargers game on Sunday afternoon,” CBN News reported.

Hamlin thanked his supporters in a recent Instagram post.

“When you put real love out into the world it comes back to you 3x’s as much,” he wrote.

“The love has been overwhelming, but I’m thankful for every single person that prayed for me and reached out. We brung the world back together behind this. If you know me you know this only gone make me stronger. On a long road keep praying for me!”

A joint statement from the Bills and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center stated that Hamlin was still in critical condition over the weekend.

However, as of Monday afternoon, he was discharged from the hospital and transferred to a hospital in Buffalo following the outpouring of prayer and support over the weekend.

Movieguide® previously reported on Hamlin’s recovery process:

The team announced that doctors were able to remove the 24-year-old player’s breathing tubes and that he FaceTimed his teammates.

“Per the physicians at UCMC, Damar’s breathing tube was removed overnight,” the Bills said on Twitter. “He continues to progress remarkably in his recovery.

“His neurologic function remains intact and he has been able to talk to his family and care team,” they added.

People from around the world have gathered to pray for Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest mid-game on Monday.

“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition,” the Bills tweeted shortly after midnight on January 3.

The Monday night game against the Cincinnati Bengals, which was suspended after Hamlin’s injury, has now been canceled.

On Friday, Hamlin was able to FaceTime his teammates during their morning meeting.

“Love you boys,” Hamlin said.

The head coach for the Bills, Sean McDermott, thanked God for protecting and providing for Hamlin.

“Glory to God for His keeping Damar and his family in the palm of His hand over the last couple of days and His healing powers,” McDermott said in a press conference on Thursday.

McDermott also thanked the first-responders who were able to resuscitate Hamlin on the field, and for the family, friends and fans’ prayers.

“The faith, hope and love that have been displayed over the last three days has been nothing short of amazing,” he said. “It’s amazing to know the impact that this has had on so many people. And for Damar to be awake and his mom to be able to share that with him is incredible.”
