Double Olympic Champion Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran a personal best in the 400 meter with a time of 48.74. Her time became the fastest of 2023 so far.

McLaughlin-Levrone shared a photo on her Instagram and wrote, “God’s grace is sufficient for each and everyday. The peace He brings surpasses that of any outcome, and the joy of running for Him, makes these moments that much sweeter. ???

“Excited for all that is to come. Looking forward to representing team USA ?? in Budapest! To God be the glory,” she added.

She concluded her post with Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Following her race, McLaughlin-Levrone told U.S. broadcaster NBC, “The greats always push themselves, and I want to be one of them, so I have to push myself and get out of my comfort zone. I’m just happy to be here.”

In the opening heats and semi-finals of her event McLaughlin-Levrone ran a 49.79 and 49.67, she stood at the top of the standings following each round. Her final time of 48.74 was just .04 seconds off of the London 2012 record which is held by Sanya Richards-Ross (48.70).

“I think I’m getting more used to it, the more I run it,” expressed of her races at the championships. “I’m really happy with that time.”

On top of her impressive time in the flat 400m, McLaughlin-Levrone’s usual event is the 400m hurdles. However, she has yet to perform in that event in 2023.

Instead, she has put all of her time and focus on the flat 400m event. There is speculation, McLaughlin-Levrone is going after the longest standing world record in any men’s or women’s flat 400m event. The one who holds the world record in the flat 400m is Marita Koch, with a time of 47.60 seconds, that record has stood since 1985.

In Budapest, McLaughlin-Levrone has no idea what event she plans to race.

“I have no idea,” she said. “That’s a great question. I have no idea, I have no clue.”
