WAR ROOM star Karen Abercrombie portrayed Grandma Quill in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3.

Abercrombie sat down with Christian Headlines to talk about her job as an actress, “It is a ministry to me,” she said of acting. “My gifts as well as my life [are] God-given, and so, to the best of my ability, I want to use the gifts that He’s given me in a way that would honor the Giver.” She continued, “I may be saying someone else’s words, but while I’m doing it and trying to do it in excellence, it’s a form of praise.”

In the film, Peter Quill (portrayed by Chris Pratt) makes his way back to earth to visit his grandfather. When Quill knocks on the door, it is none other than Grandma Quill who opens the door.

Abercrombie remembered, “One of my agents reached out to me…and asked if I would be interested. And I was like, ‘Yeah, sure.’ And then I did the audition. And we started communicating with Marvel [the studio].” She continued, “And then everything went quiet. And then I got another email—‘We’re going to start taping in Atlanta.’”

Once she finished filming, Abercrombie posted the news on her Facebook,  “I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play Grandma Quill in the new GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOLUME 3.”

“It’s an opportunity to be what we profess to be. Even if you’re not running, grabbing people, taking them to the back and trying to save them or share the message of Christ, we can do that in how we respond,” Abercrombie told Christian Headlines.

Movieguide® recently reported on the film’s opening weekend box office results:

The third, and final, installment in the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY trilogy released to theaters this weekend as the summer movie season starts up. The movie was originally forecasted to bring in $170 million during its opening weekend, but thanks to positive word-of-mouth, the estimate was raised to $282 million, which was easily surpassed by the real numbers.

The movie raked in $114 million at the domestic box office, making it the second-largest opening weekend this year, trailing only to THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE. The Marvel movie was especially popular in Imax, which drew in $25 million in global ticket sales, the largest global opening of the year for Imax.

“James Gunn and our partners at Marvel and Disney leaned heavily into Imax technology to deliver a s=visually stunning and emotional finale to this iconic franchise,” Imax CEO Rich Gelfond said. “We expect the strong audience response to yield a long, successful run at the box office.”

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 is James Gunn’s final movie with Marvel before he takes over at DC Studios. This movie is of particular interest to Christian audiences as it promotes a strong Christian worldview, including multiple positive references to God and heaven. However, parents should be cautioned that the movie also includes large amounts of profanity and violence.
