THE VOICE judge Gwen Stefani says couples need God to make a marriage work.
“What’s the best advice you’ve ever received about love?” Drew Barrymore asked Stefani when she went on THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW this week.
The singer, who’s been married to country star Blake Shelton for four years, said, “Best advice would probably be, make sure you have a third party.” She pointed up to signify that she was referring to God.
Stefani fell in love with Shelton while they judged on THE VOICE in 2014. They began to date the following year.
“We started this friendship, which was just unbelievable that God would put us in a position to have each other at that moment, in the same exact moment,” Stefani explained of her relationship in 2016. She clarified she hadn’t been “trying to start a relationship” with Shelton.
“At the time when it was going down, never in my wildest dreams would I ever imagine the miracle that happened to me,” she told Yahoo Entertainment in 2017. “Some people don’t like to hear this, but for me, it was a spiritual intervention. It was a true miracle. I think the only way I got through all the hard times is just my spiritual faith and my belief in God, because I’ve just seen the miracles around me.”
She says everything in life comes after her faith, which she prioritizes above all else.
“I just always have been constantly asking for guidance. That’s all I care about. Everything else is underneath that,” the star said. “[Shelton] was just one of the gifts that I was given. And I’m so very, very, very grateful.”
The artists have made several songs together. “Purple Irises” is particularly important to them, as it symbolizes that they have joined their lives together to let it become something beautiful.
Stefani said the song “comes from the idea that when you plant something, you are planting hope and watching love grow.”
“We are in this together, we planted the seeds together and we are growing together,” she said in a press release. Shelton added, “We love this song so much.”
In 2023, Shelton told TODAY, “I mean, the best part is lying down with her at night and then waking up and she’s there in the morning. I just didn’t know that that was out there, that that was possible.”
By placing God at the heart of their marriage, Stefani and Shelton have built a bond rooted in purpose and hope.
