Hallmark Announces AURORA TEAGARDEN Prequel

By Movieguide® Contributor

The AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES franchise is headed in a new direction after Hallmark announced its first movie in the franchise without Candace Cameron Bure.

Entertainment Tonight recently reported that Hallmark is planning to make a prequel movie, AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES: SOMETHING NEW, with an all-new cast.

Skyler Samuels will star as the young version of Aurora Teagarden, while Evan Roderick will play a younger Arthur Smith. Marilu Henner, who plays Aurora’s mother in the series, will reprise her role.

According to ET’s plot synopsis, AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES: SOMETHING NEW will follow Aurora post-college and back in her hometown, where she is working as a teacher’s assistant in a crime-fiction class and as waitress. When pal Sally’s fiancé goes missing, she and Arthur team up to look for him. They find a body, but when it turns out to be someone else, Sally’s fiancé becomes the prime suspect in a murder investigation.

“Our viewers have been waiting for more adventures with Aurora and her friends — what better way to do that than to take them back to when the young, amateur sleuth was just coming into her own?” Emily Merlin, Development Manager of Programming at Hallmark Media, said of the upcoming prequel. “The AURORA TEAGARDEN franchise is a fan favorite and we’re excited to share this new chapter with viewers.”

The franchise was formerly led by Bure. Her performance as Aurora was very popular with audiences. A portion of the Movieguide® review for AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES: HEIST AND SEEK, reads:

AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES:  HEIST AND SEEK is an entertaining, well-made mystery with lots of surprises. Led by Candace Cameron Bure (“Bu-ray”) in the title role, the cast does an excellent job. The movie has a strong moral worldview. It stresses finding out the truth and exposing it, no matter what. Based on the beloved mystery novels by Charlaine Harris, AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES is a good series for families to watch if they like mystery and wholesome content. AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES: HEIST AND SEEK is a great example of the series, with a nice twist that viewers won’t see coming.

Movieguide® previously reported on Bure’s exit from Hallmark’s AURORA TEAGARDEN MYSTERIES:

Candace Cameron Bure has concluded her appearances on Aurora Teagarden Mysteries on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries, a fan-favorite mystery movie series.

“Crown Media has enjoyed over 10 years of collaboration with Candace,” a Hallmark spokesperson said. “We respect her decision and thank her for her many contributions.”

The announcement comes as Bure steps away from Crown Media, which owns Hallmark, and moves to competing network, GAC Family. Though her agreement with GAC is not exclusive, she does not have any additional programs set to move forward.

“She is set to develop and produce original content through her company, Candy Rock Entertainment, will help create year-round seasonal celebration content and will have a large part in the company’s annual Great American Christmas,” according to a GAC Media statement to Variety.
