Every wonder what THE CHOSEN set is like? Movieguide®’s behind-the-scenes look shows the extraordinary work that goes into the hit Bible show.
“The cool thing is when we get to do some of these Jerusalem sets,” creator Dallas Jenkins told Movieguide®’s Jeremy Carroll as they walked through the set. “Caiaphas’s house, which we’ll also see in Season 6 because there’s a trial at Caiaphas’s house. Pilate’s, you know, we’ve really expanded, and we’ve gotten to see Pilate’s quarters, and I love the scope.”
Jenkins explained that the heart behind the beautiful sets is to create a space for relationships.
“You know, look, THE CHOSEN is ultimately a very intimate story, and we’re never going to get to a place where we do it like a sword and sandals epic where it’s battle sequences and everything’s big, even in our big sets,” he explained. “It’s ultimately about people and about relationships, but when you have a big palette like that to paint on, it is really fun. So Pilate’s set and Caiaphas’s set are really fun because there’s so much depth and so much space. And so, I love depth and space because then it helps actually put a spotlight on those intimate moments which is ultimately what the show is about.”
Caiaphas was the high priest when Jesus was crucified and pushed for His death. The Pharisees and the Sadducees met at the high priest’s palace to “express their concern that Jesus’ growing number of followers would incite the anger of the Roman Empire,” according to Got Questions.
Caiaphas responded in John 11:50, saying,”You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
Carroll noted that there is Indian and Turkish architecture in Caiaphas’s house, and the set designer said it’s his favorite set he’s ever built.

“This is his foyer. Because it’s Caiaphas, we have a very large handwashing station. Kind of wanted to make it bigger than life. We took our cues from Indian architecture, Moroccan architecture and Turkish architecture,” explained production designer James R. Cunningham. “And so it’s kind of a little mix of everything. And we ended up on having one space which is his office or what they would call a ‘midrash.’ A ‘midrash’ was where people would come together and talk about ideas, especially religious ideas.”
THE CHOSEN Season 5 will begin releasing in theaters tomorrow with Part 1. Part 2 arrives on April 4, followed by Part 3 on April 11.
“The people of Israel welcome Jesus as king while his disciples anticipate his crowning. But — instead of confronting Rome — he turns the tables on the Jewish religious festival. Their power threatened, the country’s religious and political leaders will go to any length to ensure this Passover meal is Jesus’ last,” the synopsis reads.
