Here’s How You Can Thank Veterans This Thanksgiving
By Movieguide® Contributor
This Thanksgiving, you can show your support for those who have sacrificed so much to keep our country safe.
There are numerous avenues for those looking to give back to our veterans and active service members. An easy way is to reach out to the military members in your own life. Whether it’s a text, a call or a letter, even a simple, ‘Thank you for your service” goes a long way.
People can also give some of their time and volunteer through the numerous organizations that help veterans. The American Legion, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Habitat for Humanity and the Home Depot Foundation are all great charities that support our nation’s heroes.
Another great option to show your gratitude is to donate. A program like Vet Tix allows veterans to attend events for free, while Operation Gratitude provides care packages to both veterans and active military members.
While it is all too easy to take our military members, both past and present, for granted, we must take the time to reflect on what their service and sacrifices mean to us. When we give back to them and share our support, it truly makes a difference in their and their families’ lives. Perhaps nobody knows this better than Gary Sinise who has devoted his life to honoring our veterans.
“A lot of what motivates me today to try to take care of our active duty and first responders, the genesis for that is what happened when our Vietnam veterans came home, and they did not get the services they deserve for serving our country, and I didn’t want to see that happen again, to our Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. So, I just started raising my hand where I could,” Sinise told AARP.
“Freedom and security are precious gifts that we, as Americans, should never take for granted,” Sinise’s foundation added. “We must do all we can to extend our hand in times of need to those who willingly sacrifice each day to provide that freedom and security. While we can never do enough to show gratitude to our nation’s defenders, we can always do a little more.”
