Hobby Lobby CEO David Green Reveals Biblical Principles for Success

By Movieguide® Contributor

CEO of billion-dollar company Hobby Lobby, David Green shares his biblical principles to success with Kirk Cameron on TBN.

Green’s first principle? “Give the true owner the vote.”

“When you have a large business sometimes in life, you’re making decisions and we try to find a way to let God vote before we do anything of any size,” Green said on TBN. “For instance, if someone offers to sell me some property, I may throw a number out there that knows it’s a miracle if it works. So, I want to make sure that when I’m going forward, we want to make sure what we do God agrees with it.”

Another principle is to “listen to and obey the Holy Spirit above all.”

It says in “Scripture that God never leaves you nor forsakes you, so I like to see God with me all the time. He’s always there. Pray without ceasing,” Green said.

“Another scripture is ‘you have not because you ask not,’ Green added. “So, if I’m praying and I’m asking and I’m walking with God, I’m doing it in His will, not something that’s for me.”

His third principle is to “maximize the risk for the right reasons.”

“Make sure when you do that, that you’re in line with what God would have you to do in your obedience with Him,” Green explained. “But you do need to take a certain amount of risk but you’re doing it for the right reason. You’re not doing it for your own income, but you’re doing it because you want to do more in areas of ministry.”

One of the final principles Green and Cameron discussed is to “build for 150 years not just the next generation.”

“It’s so important that we think about our kids and grandkids and our great grandkids,” Green explained. “The most important thing in my life is my family and I think that I need to focus on family and to make sure that the business is here 150 years is to think of our business as a ministry.”

“It’s really a paradigm change between ownership and stewardship,” he added. “We are stewards and not owners. Not because we say so because the Bible says that He owns everything. So, how can we own something? Our goal is to have our family to see the business as they owe it, instead of it owes them.”

Movieguide® recently reported what Green had to say about the company’s success thus far:

“God has been really good to us,” Green said of Hobby Lobby’s success during an appearance on Kirk Cameron’s TAKEAWAYS. “What we’re really trying to do is find biblical principles in how we operate our company, and it has served us very well.”

Green pointed to those Christian values as the reason why the company has done so well over the years.

“We also see our business more as a ministry and really not a family business,” he explained. “We see it as a ministry to bring on and let people know about the good things of Jesus Christ.”

The CEO also spoke about his decision to give away 50% of Hobby Lobby’s profits.

“I believe that God has blessed us,” he said. “Because we know it’s not ours…we want to do as much as we can in ministry as we possibly can, and I think God has rewarded that.”
