How Bear Grylls’ Faith Sustained Him Throughout His Career

Having faced countless life or death situations, celebrity survivalist Bear Grylls explained how his faith has been the backbone of his life, helping him through every situation.

“I don’t feel particularly ‘churched’ in a formal sort of religion, but I have a strong Christian faith that’s been part of my life for many years,” Grylls told The Times. “I say my prayers in the morning, say sorry, say thank you, say help. I’ve seen a lot of life. A lot of loss. I’ve seen a lot of difficult moments. And my faith has been a quiet strength and backbone through that.”

While Grylls is best known for his countless survival shows where he faces the extremes of our planet and walks away victorious, that wasn’t always his career plan. He began his career in the British military, specially trained in unarmed combat. However, a training accident left him with three broken vertebrae and, sadly, no future in that role.

Grylls, however, would not give up on his spirit of adventure, and only 18 months later, he became the youngest Brit to ever summit Mount Everest at only 23 years old. While standing at the top of the world, he credited God with his success.

“Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall. But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength,” Grylls recalled quoting (Isaiah 40: 30-31) while at the peak. “They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint.”

“I’ve never stopped dreaming and pursuing my dreams,” he added. “If you see me on TV, mud on my face, knee-deep in a swamp or snow, the weather ungodly cold or insufferably hot, don’t let that fool you…The greatest adventure is faith.”
