Drew Scott is taking a stance against homelessness of former foster-care children.
In a post to Instagram, the PROPERTY BROTHERS star announced his partnership with the organization “A Sense of Home” to prevent homelessness before it begins.
“I‘m excited to announce that after volunteering with @asenseofhomeorg for the past two years, I recently joined their board of directors,” Scott began.
“This amazing nonprofit does incredible work creating homes for young people exiting foster care, and they recently launched a new emergency relief program that provides fully functioning home environments for those who lost everything in the Los Angeles fires,” he continued.
Scott expressed his hopes to see others join the fight against homelessness.
“I would love to see my community get involved! Please sign up to volunteer, donate furniture or funds at asenseofhome.org,” he concluded.
Executive director of the organization Rachel Stich commented on the post, “So grateful to have you on our Board Drew! ❤️” Another user added, “Congratulations Drew! Love that you are helping to change so many lives for the better! 👏❤️❤️🎉🎊”
A Sense of Home’s website states that the group “prevents homelessness before it starts by creating first-ever homes and a community for youth aging out of foster care.”
The website notes that “50% of those struggling with homelessness are former foster youth,” and the National Alliance to End Homelessness explained the connection between homelessness and those exiting the foster care system.
“Although we are deemed adults at the age of 18, few of us are truly prepared for the stressors of adult life. In fact, the brain is not fully mature until the age of 25, affecting emotional and cognitive development,” the blog states, noting that this is an even more difficult transition for those leaving foster care. “They may not have acquired adequate coping skills to deal with all that life will throw at them. They are likely to be dealing with trauma from navigating through the system, and it is important to recognize the coping skills they have learned to reduce negative or unwanted feelings.”
A Sense of Home has also made a huge effort in LA wildfire relief, which affected many earlier this year. “ASOH continues its vital work creating homes and a community for aged-out foster youth at the same pace and capacity as always,” the website explains. “Many of our Alumni and their children have been deeply impacted by the LA fires, including losing their homes, jobs, and being displaced.”
They are providing help by raising funds to help people rebuild after the devastation.
Although homelessness is a devastating crisis for anyone, through Scott’s advocacy along with organizations such as A Sense of Home, it can be prevented before it begins.
