How Eagles RB’s Stats Make Math Fun for These Philadelphia Second Graders

Amber Kiley, a second-grade teacher at MaST Community Charter School II in Philadelphia, has gone viral because she uses Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley’s stats to teach her students math.

“I knew coming into my first year I wanted to do something special and something different, so I decided, ‘Let’s run with the Eagles,'” Kiley told 6ABC Philadelphia

“I decided we’ll start tracking his rushing yards, and I didn’t know how they were going to take it, but they loved it,” she explained.

Every week, Kiley’s students would learn addition by taking the amount of rushing yards Barkley had and adding them to those from the week before. They learned to add up to the thousands as he has rushed for over 2,000 rushing yards this season.

Her students fully embraced the challenge and even watched football highlights as homework.

“Even beyond the sports part of it, it’s fostering that nice community environment here,” Kiley explained. “We tie our football into our community. So they are learning about the community around us.”

This also helps students to connect sports — something fun — with academics, something not all students particularly enjoy. This helps them to understand how math is relevant to the world around them.

Aside from math, Kiley’s class has also learned about the values of kindness, sacrifice and the will to never give up.

“They’ve learned to never give up. They learn to work as a team. They’ve learned that things get tough and it’s not always going to go your way,” she said.

Kiley shared several photos of her time on GOOD MORNING AMERICA on her Instagram. “Thank you @goodmorningamerica for this!” she wrote.
