Kirk Cameron noted the way the media is bombarding children with secular teachings and explained why parents need to step up and refocus their kids on lessons from the Bible.
“There used to be shows on TV where people would pray as they went to sleep at night — like LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE. There were even cartoons for kids,” Cameron said. “I remember DAVEY AND GOLIATH, where they would talk about God. Mister Rogers was a Presbyterian minister in real life, and he encouraged kids with these kinds of values.”
In the past decades, however, all of culture has shifted away from these biblical teachings, largely due to the media focusing on secular ideals. In recent decades, this shift to secularism has become extremely overt, with places like Disney teaching radical liberal ideologies, even when it eats into their profits. Since 2007, the company has received a perfect score on the Corporate Equality Index, which assesses how a company’s policies, practices and benefits pertain to the LGBTQ+ community.
Cameron believes that companies have gotten away with this secularization for too long, which has caused a whole generation to believe these lies, as they had little to no outside influences fighting for truth.
“We didn’t stand up against the secularization. We’ve gotten away from the church. We’ve gotten away from Bible reading in our own lives as parents,” he said. “And we’ve neglected to teach those things to our children. And what’s happening is the secularists have simply picked up our playbook, our Christian playbook in the Bible, and they began running the plays of discipling our children better than we are. And that’s why it seems that our children are now walking away from the values that we want them to embrace.”
Cameron, however, does not believe the situation is hopeless. Instead, Christians need to stand up for their beliefs and stop supporting media that emphasizes anti-biblical teachings. He promotes change in the entertainment industry by creating, producing and funding content for kids that is overtly Christian, while also raising awareness about just how bad secular content has become.
Kirk Cameron isn’t the only one in the industry who believes changes need to be made in the values being taught through the media. Christians in the industry are fighting for faith-based media to be made, and this battle has begun to bear much fruit as studios find these projects extremely successful.
“I believe that entertainment sits upstream from culture,” said Merryman Hoogstraten, an executive at Jon Erwin’s Wonder Project Studio, which is creating biblical content for Prime Video. “Here at The WONDER Project, our goal to is to flood the world with hope. I am convinced we can make a difference by telling stories that restore hope in things worth believing in – family, community, God, and America. We will do this at a scale for a global audience that seeks faith and values-driven entertainment. And we will give the audience a brand they can call their own.”
