How Julie Andrews Would Have Encouraged Her Younger Self

Multi-time Grammy award winner Julie Andrews sat down with Vanity Fair to share her advice for young people getting started in the entertainment industry.
“I’m often asked what advice I would give to young people who are just starting in this best of all possible worlds,” Andrews said. “If you love what you do, and you really, really want to do it, then embrace it with all your heart because some great good fortune is going to pass under your nose when you least expect it. Some marvelous surprise will come your way, some offer, some magic will happen.”
She challenged young actors to work hard.
“But be ready, do your homework,” Andrews continued. “That’s usually the advice that I give. Because when you’re asked to do something as miraculous as some of the things that I’ve been asked to do, you’d better be ready, and I think, to a certain extent, I did a lot of homework, and it stood me in great, good stead.”
The actress shared a little about the homework she did for her three and a half years starring in the musical MY FAIR LADY.
“I was completely out of my depth,” she revealed. “And then it was just a question, really, of putting my head down and learning, day after day after day, my craft. It really was the greatest learning experience on stage that I could ever have had…I mean, it was a tremendous experience for me.”
Andrews starred in numerous blockbuster movies, including MARY POPPINS, THE PRINCESS DIARIES, THE PRINCESS DIARIES 2, THE SOUND OF MUSIC and BRIDGERTON.
Now 88 years old, the actress is still learning, something she wishes she could tell her younger self.
“What I know now is that there’s always something more to learn, because you never stop really,” Andrews said. “You don’t just grow up and get set, at least you shouldn’t.”
“What I know now is to remain curious and that nothing is wasted. Nothing you do in life is wasted,” she continued. “I used to travel endlessly around — even when I was a child performer — and think, ‘What is this doing for me?’ I have found so many ways to employ what I observed in those days and incorporate it now.”
Rumors have circulated that she and Anne Hathaway would star in a third PRINCESS DIARIES movie. Movieguide® reported:
Fans of the PRINCESS DIARIES franchise have been clamoring for a third movie for nearly 20 years; Julie Andrews recently shared her take on whether a return to that story will ever happen.
“Ah, I’ve been asked that so many times,” Andrews told TODAY.com. “There was dialogue about it [but] nothing had been realized. And I may be wrong, but I think it’s been shelved now. I can’t be sure.”
“I’m sure there will be another version on another day,” she added, noting that it may be a good thing the series ended at two. “It’s quite a long time now since the two DIARIES were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, ‘til it’s dead.”
“I’d be very happy if we did do another one,” Andrews continued. “But I don’t expect to.”
