How Rediscovering God’s Plan Launched Prayer App That Reaches Millions

Matt Potter, a college dropout, co-founded PRAY.COM, the “#1 App for Daily Prayer and Bedtime Bible Stories,” and he shared how during a recent episode of Matthew West’s podcast.
Meeting Apple founder Steve Jobs in high school sparked Potter’s interest in computers and technology. A few years later when he was in college, Jobs launched the App Store, and Potter dropped out of college to get into apps. He went on to design over 8,000 apps, but he eventually reached a point where he felt “empty inside.”
“I just felt like I lost my purpose. I felt like I wasn’t on track with God’s plan for my life,” Potter explained.
While he was trying to figure out what God wanted for his life, he ran into an old friend, Steve Gatena, at a coffee shop.
Potter “could tell Gatena had been struggling, and they spoke of the recent loss of his friend and business partner in a plane crash, but how he was beginning to find hope again through prayer.”
After the two got to talking they came up with the idea “to build the ESPN for Christians,” a place where people can go to find Christian content.
“God’s providence, right. Like I just talked to my pastor the night before,” Potter told West. “Everything’s going great, I’m looking for something new, something bigger to give back. Steve tells me PRAY.COM, the digital destination for Christians, and so I stepped down as CEO of my company the next day.”
Since its founding in 2016, the app has gone on to touch millions of lives.
“As the No. 1 app for daily prayer and faith-based content, PRAY.COM recently surpassed 2.5 billion minutes in prayer and the 100 million podcast downloads milestone,” AccessWire reported.
The app helps users “make prayer a priority” through devotionals, original content and Bedtime Bible stories narrated by celebrities.
