How Resurrection Movies Can Inspire Our Faith Right Now
By Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor
Easter weekend is rapidly approaching, and movies give us a unique opportunity to visually reflect on the life of Christ. During this time of turmoil, movies can remind us that Jesus’s life, death and resurrection is the best good news to fill one’s spirit.
Consider Jesus’s final words in the Gospel of John, “… He said, ‘It is finished!’ And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” – John 19:30 (NKJV).
Jesus’s fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan for the world provides strength that transcends any virus or repercussions affecting the world right now.
We need only to see how Christ conquered the grave to remind us that He is still alive and moving in the world today.
When we see this visual representation, it inspires us to worship.
For instance, the final scene in Mel Gibson’s THE PASSION OF THE CHIRST shows Jesus (Jim Caviezel) as he stands up in his tomb with his nail marks still intact.
Viewers can’t help but get chills.
Other TV series like THE BIBLE and THE CHOSEN depict that power of God’s plan for Jesus as it unfolds within the context of biblical history.
Here a few great Movieguide® approved resurrection and Jesus-oriented movies and TV shows to consider, in no particular order:
- THE YOUNG MESSIAH
- BREAKTHROUGH
- THE CHOSEN
- BEN-HUR (1959)
- THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST – for mature audiences over 17 years old
- RISEN
- THE BIBLE
Christians need to remember the Good News consistently, but as the world is in disarray these days, it’s all the more vital that the Gospel remains at the forefront.
Have you considered how curious it is that COVID-19 is happening during the season of lent, right before the celebration of Easter?
Perhaps this is a great opportunity to take stock of what you find yourself consistently faithful in or what supplies your hope.
Think of what occupies you mind the majority of the day. If it’s not the strength of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, ask yourself if there needs to be a change.
